I have a good friend who's a proffesional clown and he's taught me a whole lot about performing, building character and bringing life into my act.
Clowns also have an ability to touch areas of our subconcious mind and trigger interesting responses. They're funny - but also mysterious, an illusion and seem to come from another world. They're also often a whole lot more entertaining than the average magician...

As for magic and clowning - why not? There are a number of genres of magic - surely there's room for a clown?
