Is this a good ID routine?

Postby Strep » Feb 10th, '06, 15:36

Forgive me if anyone else has already come up with this idea but I'm new to magic and I've just thought of this and liked the 'shared dream' mentalist feel to it.

I imagine I'm at a dinner table with friends (I know so few tricks at present I haven't a routine to imagine I'm doing) and I ask them if any of them believe in 'shared dreams'. Irrespective of the answers I continue "The reason why I ask is that last night I had a very vivid dream, and you [points to a particular person] were in it." I'm sure to get some rather unsavory comments knowing my friends but, whilst producing the ID pack from my pocket and holding it up in front of me, I say "Yes, in my dream I handed you this pack of cards. I asked you to take the deck out and shuffle them. I then turned my back and asked you to turn the cards face up and start thumbing through them until you found one that you liked. I then instructed you to turn that one card face down and then cut the cards a few times until you were comfortable that your chosen card was lost in the pack." I would then go on to say "You then put the cards back into the pack and handed them back to me. Thank you for handing them back."

When I say "Thank you for handing them back" I motion with the pack. This is a throw away comment but it will, I hope, on a subconscious level be a little confusing and almost seem like they have just handed the cards back.

In only mentioning that I dreamt all this at the start of the effect I'm hoping that when I'm describing what occurred, it will [again subconsciously] sound more like I'm reiterating what has just happened - thus at the end there will hopefully be a little less heat on the ID.

I would turn to the individual and say "Do you remember dreaming that last night?" Assuming they say "No" I would press them and say "Are you sure?.....Is there not a card that feels familiar to you?.....What card did you choose?

When they finally pick one I then reveal their card and embellish on how fansinating it is for people to share "mutual dreams" and the use of "collective unconscious" ...etc.

Hopefully the verbal misdirection of them actually handling, shuffling and sorting through the deck will stop people from wanting to examine it [again].

I would love some constructive feedback on how I could improve this, but please go easy on me if you think it's cr*p, like I said, I'm new here and have a lot to learn.

I like this!

I think it's much better than the usual nonsense of getting a spec to shuffle an ID ("You need to take it out the box first!").

Nothing more to say - it's a really nice presentation.

There is a very close version of this used by a great magician called Mel Mellors so the idea isn't original even if you've only just thought of it. For obvious reasosns I can't reproduce the full routine in the public area but it's a good one and one I found to be very entertaining even though I knew what he was doing!

A very familiar routine, but a great 'outside the box' sidestep from the regular well-known routine.

Having just read through what I wrote earlier I forgot to mention (although I imagined it in my mind) that when I am telling them that I had a dream last night I point out "It was a dream of this moment, this point in time.....rather like déjà vu."

This makes the "Thank you for handing them back" point a little more relevant and reinforces the idea that the assistant has only just handled the deck.

I'm really pleased that some of you like the idea and may even try it. Gives me a warm feeling inside (although, that may be cystitis). Thank you.

I too thought that this presentation sounded familiar but couldn't think where I had seen it. I did however see this live so obviously someone had been reading up

My own preference with the ID, if circumstances permit is to produce the card selected by the random choices of three or four females. This looks even more impossible with that number as opposed to one person.

One selects red or black, the next, depending on what was chosen (say black) selects from spades or clubs, the next selects a picture or number, if a number then the next (or back to the first person) selects odd or even, and then finally the next person in turn selects the card.

I've found this to be one of the best for reactions from an ID but I can't claim it as my own as I saw someone else perform it (and I know that it wasn't their own creation either).

It's not really an optical illusion - it just looks like one!

I had the thought for this presentation independantly but do not deny that premise for it has possibly been used before. :?

That's cool. I will definately remember that one! Cheers.

yes. (full stop!)

i like ID tricks that have massivly long winded story lines (this IS a good thing), since you're not going to actually be doing a fat lot of magic you may as well milk for everything you can.
as a test one night i did a very long winded somewhat similar story with the deck, to a few groups, to great astonishment. to another assortment of people i simply did i "name a card... i will turn this card upside down using The Power Of My Mind..." kind of thing, they just thought it was a nice trick!
QED!
