Suitable wedding material

Postby greedoniz » Feb 17th, '06, 17:06

It is looking like I might be best man at a wedding in summer and am already thinking about some sort of trick I can do as part of my best man speech. Unfortunately almost all my material up to now is close up work and obviously wont be suitable for a large crowd (approx 150 peeps...GULP!).
I do have Harry Andersons Needle through Arms but maybe this isn't the most suitable illusion to do whilst aunties, uncles, grans and kids are finishing their desserts.
Has anyone have any suggestions of something that is good fun and suitable for everyone?

my advice is to check with the bride and groom first to see if they are ok with you adding magic to the speech. Remember this is ultimately their day and not a platform for you to perform.

If they are happy with it - so be it, if not maybe it would be more appropriate to do some walk about magic at the reception...

If they were ok, then I would suggest keep it simple and limit it to a bunch of flowers for the bride or maybe the head cheerleader.

I didn't mean head cheer leader did I? head bridesmaid...

I hope there is cheerleaders at the wedding. Hey that's an idea for an outift for me...I'd look great with pom poms

Luckily the wedding is my Old man so I'm sure I can hijack it. I wasn't thinking of doing a routine or anything like that, more a quick highly visual gag. I do have an appearing pool cue.

Hey maybe I could say my speech is in a suitcase and get the appearing ladder? hmmmm

Actually my lardy butt in gym knickers is probably a worse idea than the needle thru arm

From experience, I can safely say that it could go 2 ways...

Either major success, or major disaster.

I've had both—and considering I've only ever performed at two weddings, I think that's a fair ratio ;)

 Well that instills confidence.....lol

Well it cant be any worse than the other two times I've been best man and both marrages have ended in divorce. Yes I have a 100% record.

So any ideas for a visual magical gag or are we just sayin "Avoid like the plague and go for a ernest and emotional speech"?

If you do it, do something that is suitable for a large crowd that involves a story with an outcome in relivance to their happiness (the couple) for the rest of their lives. Make it relivant to the day, to their relationship, and them coming together. That is what the day is about. It isn't about you, or your magic, so why should you and your magic be about anything else, for that moment?

How about Birthday Banner by Danny Archer. Check his site for a demo.

I know its a kids birthday party trick, but I'm sure it could be adapted for a wedding situation. It would fit in to the part of the speech where you read cards from those guests that couldn't make it. Plus its very visual.

Just a thought...

At my own wedding I did hankerchief to rose at the end of my speech and gave it to my wife.

She was impressed but most of the males in the room got stick from their wives or partners about why didn't they do something so romantic on their wedding day (or that they now expected something similar at their wedding).

This is the only wedding I've performed at and it was a success.

Good Luck.
