Little puzzle for you ...........

Postby moonbeam » Feb 23rd, '06, 23:22

Both large triangles are made up of 3 parts:
A light blue triangle, a dark blue triangle and a rectangle.

Both large triangles are the same area (13 x 5 squares) - so therefore because both light blue triangles are the same ( 8 x 3 ) and both dark blue triangles are the same ( 5 x 2 ), it follows that both rectangles should also be equal in area, but it can be seen that the top rectangle has an area of 15 squares ( 5 x 3 ) and the bottom one has an area of 16 squares ( 8 x 2 ).

So where does the extra square come from ??

Answers on a postcard to....... ermm .... me

There's a free pint in it to whoever gets it first - just 1 snag - u gotta meet me in my local for it

If you look along the hypotenuse of the triangles, it seems like the bottom triangle is cutting into the next empty square more than the other one. Is the angle of the bottom triangle different to that of the top, therefore making room for one extra square :?: It's possible that the light and dark triangles are different angles aswell... :? I'm not sure, that's a good puzzle.

Seen as I pass through Burnley evey now and then. Is it sufficent enough to say that neither of the above shapes are triangles? That should be enough to let you know that I know whilst not giving the game away. In fact it will probably infuriate people more

Now I have it (I think). Is the top one very slightly convex, the bottom one slightly concave? Now, where's that pint???

There is an extra square in a fashion - it's just that the 2 large "triangles" are not triangles after all (as Dfitz1000 kinda indicated initially) and the bottom shape is 1 square larger in area than the top one.

Dfitz if you're ever passing through Burnley at any time (God only knows why you'd want to do that  ), pm me and I'll arrange to meet u for a beer or 2  (I'm a man of my word 8) )

Edit: Just seen that u live in Ireland..... oh well - the offer's still there, just in case.
In the meantime - Johndoe, if u wanna claim you're beer, pm me next time you're passing through this God forsaken place
