have you noticed people get impressed by the simplest things

The other day I did emerge triumphant and some other tricks of mine and people were impressed. Then after I was joking around and did that one where you have the 4 cards. 2 cards on the outside and 2 on the inside and you just switch hands and bring the outside cards to the inside. And people were like k that is your best trick yet. I was like whaaa......lol do you guys ever get that you will work your ass off to nail and a trick perfect and perform it then you do a simple trick and people always like that one best. I dont understand haha....but oh well Im not complaining makes my job easier if people get entertained by the simple stuff lol.

you are absolutely right. to the audience, the effect is the only thing that matters. the method doesn't matter to them. if the effect is a good one, it doesn't matter how many sleights you have used to produce that effect or how many hours you have spent preparing for those sleights. the only thing the audience sees is the effect.

it's a true story. when i started doing coin magic i wanted to get myself to a point where i could do what i thought was some amazing slights.
but so far i havn't really gone any further than Ammars - intro to coin magic and that lovely bobo book. it's amazing how much milege you can get out of something as simple as a french drop.
with cards i find people are generally more impressed by tricks that involve them in some way, handling the cards mainly. for this to work properly it's just easier to use some self working tricks, or something very simple. simplicity makes you more confident! and it leads to better effects.
i once saw a magician at a juggling convention doing a transposition trick with what seemed like some massivle comlicated and unneccesary slights. my reaction to which was to say "just use a duplicate and make life a lot easier!".... this is where i start the "its about the result not the procedure" rant from Absolute Magic.

to sum up.... Yes

Simplest Things

Postby Dominick » Feb 26th, '06, 16:30

Hey Folks!
I have to agree...I use all of my commercial tricks and get great responses, then I do a "Classic Color Change" (or The Triple C  ) and people flip! "Change it back!!" someone yells. I enjoy it though...A lot of fun. We all know that once you know the secret of The Triple C it's one of the simplest tricks. Easy to master, but a great crowd pleaser. Card flourishes are also a good edition to make the crowd love it!
Thanks,
Dominick

If you want simple, mind blowing effects i would definately recommened Daryl's Card Revelations, available on the page that I linked to.

Some of these tricks are so simple, but you need to be able to play them up which makes the effect much more amazing! Daryl also does a great job teaching in his DVD's, and from watching the performances you can pick up a lot of tips!

I worship this man

Hmmmm interesting. I really dont mind what I do. As long as people are happy with the tricks despite if its hard or easy to do. As long as people leave happy thats all i care about lol.

I did a trick at work a couple of weeks ago which I literally just made up on the spot. I picked a paperclip up that I found on one of the tills and said to one of the girls I work with "Hey watch this". I then faked putting the paperclip in my left hand, dropped my right hand slightly and dropped the paperclip on the floor right in front of me. Then I just pretended to concentrate on my left fist (I was concentrating on pretending to concentrate, now thats redundant) then opened it to show my hand empty. Naturally people wanted to see my right hand thinking it must be there, but obviously it wasn't. She was amazed, and so were several other people from my workplace.

I was gobsmacked that people would be so fooled by this, it was a fantastic experience of not only impromptu but completely improvised magic.

It is so true! E.g. I got huge reactions from simply switching a card with a glide, which came to me as quite a surprise, when I first did it. The reason for that, I think, is that most lay people prefer to see quick and simple tricks. A lengthy routine is tiring, you have to wait for a climax watching the magician handling the cards, and the very fact that he takes his time makes the effect less impressive.

I was in class the other day. And we went down to our library to work on this Oral History project. So I'm sitting with all of my buddies and I had some index cards laying around. I picked one up, without even thinking about the people around me and did a throw vanish. All of their heads turned real fast to see where the card went and then when they noticed it didn't fly away they stared at my empty hand, I suddenly made it appear. They flipped! And I was like, "What? Oh...Yeah...It was magic?"
I mean I was caught completely off-guard with this whole going crazy over what I thought was a "nothing trick."
The end...

Spontaneous magic is great. It really catches people off-guard and you can get away with things you never would if you had they're full attention to start with.
