Small aardvarking tip

Probably fairly obvious, but something I just discovered.

For those of you who use elastic bands that would be better if they looked more like metal (and you know what I mean if you use these. If you don't know, don't ask).

1)
It's possible to make them look more metallic by using one of those metallic marker pens (I tried, using a pilot "super color" silver marker). Try stretching out the band, and coating it once (all round on both sides and edges), then letting it dry for about 15 seconds while blowing on it. Then repeat the coating, allowing to dry.

I don't think the solvent in the ink affects the rubber in the band, but mileage may vary depending on brands.

Don't get any on your hands, or whatever you're trying to gimmick, as it' can be a b****r to get off. The metallic ink will flake off after a while of use, but it might make things trickier for eagle eyed spectators.

2) You may have more luck with very soft (6B or so) pencil lead, and it's less likely to cause permanent staining if it goes in the wrong place.
Experimentation suggests that the bands have to be nearly in place in order to get the graphite to coat them properly, without the band spinning around when pressure is applied.

3) Experimentation also suggests that small bands can be cut from the neck of rubber balloons (if you use sharp scissors, and have a steady hand), that are just about suitable size if you double them over. Silvered rubber balloons are available from party and toy shops. Obviously you don't want too bright silver, but it's probably possible to get the right tone.

Balloons are a reasonable source of replacement bands, when you run out - even if you're not worried about the colour. I haven't used them for long, but I suspect they may be more durable than conventional bands - they feel as if they should be.

Just a thought or two.
