Postby Sky321 » Mar 16th, '06, 01:55

Hello

Just found this great forum

i am new to magic and i wanted to know if anyone could give me some basic card tricks, coin tricks, matter of fact any tricks would be helpful as long as they are easy to learn. any web sites or video i can watch would also be very helpful, also can anyone recommend a box of magic for beginners if so which one?

Thanks for any help you can offer

Get hold of Mark Wilson's Complete course in magic or the condensed version - The Cyclopedia of magic. It's a great place to start. :)

Hey taneous - just a question here. Is there a difference between the two versions? I've seen it on the shelves, but I wasn't sure.

The complete course contains some material that isn't in the cyclopedia. I can't remember what it is, though - I thinkit has a section on billiard balls which isn't in the cyclopedia - as well as some more stage stuff (illusions etc.). I have the cyclopedia and I still use one of the routines in my kid's show.

I do not recommend searching for single tricks, buy instead a book(s) that will teach you the fundumentals of magic. If you are serious about magic, this is the way to go. Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic has been mentioned already. For card tricks the best start is probably Royal Road to Card Magic. The best book for coins is Bobo's Mordern Coin Magic.

Have fun! :)

Do what I did: go to every library within driving distance and take out every book about magic, mindreading, hypnotism, ect. Or go find a whole bunch of DVD names with good reviews, and download them.

then you too can become part of the cause for magicians stopping putting things out on dvd like everyother parasite that thinks its ok to download stuff rather than buy it

Computer games don't affect kids; I mean if Pac-Man affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms, munching magic pills and listening to repetitive electronic music. - Kristian Wilson, Nintendo, Inc, 1989..

No offense meant here, but Elva - I can imagine you felt that slap all the way across the ocean.

no offence taken. I get the point. But if i wanted to buy a magic DVD here, I would probably have to pay double. Besides, I just started this and I'm playing to amuse my brother. it's not like im copying it for other people or selling it or anything.

Also, havn't you ever downloaded songs from the Internet? (If you havnt you must be extremely outdated) It's the same thing, and there arent any laws to stop people from doing that. I used to think that downloading things is wrong, but i gave up, because most the population who have PC's, (including creators) have done it, and think it's okay. So its a losing battle. DRM (Digital Rights Management) dont press charges or penalties against this anymore.

Elva, none of the reasons you give are valid – copying is stealing and it doesn’t matter if everyone else in the world is doing it. Here on TalkMagic we don’t condone theft for many reasons which have been discussed at length many times before and we don’t need to go through the same process again – just take our word for it and note that any further encouragement or attempts to justify copying/downloading/stealing will be edited or possibly deleted. We take this mater very seriously and deal with it accordingly.

Download them? Hmmm... You mean you stole them, don't you. I mean, it's not like you were stealing bread to live, you just wanted them for free. Do you often steal things because you want them, Elva?

Theft is theft no matter how much it is dressed up. The creators of these effects spend a lot of time working on them and deserve the respect and money for their time.

I find it hard to root for you, Elva.

Everyone else is doing it, so why shouldn't I?

I am a huge fan of music, and I download music all the time. However I can proudly say that I NEVER downloaded a single song for free. It's not being outdated, it's respecting someone else's hard work and dedication to create something.

It's extremely easy to say all of this when no one is stealing your work from you. Put money, time and effort into creating something, then go ahead and tell me you don't mind when people just steal it at their leisure.
