Decent band... nice political messages.
However... does anyone happen to know where Zack de la Rocha lives?

Cos I was just wondering if he was another one of these "I hate capitalism and America, but I make lots of moneys preaching against the country I still choose to live in..." people.

Anyone know?
Or care for that matter? lol

Not sure where he lives, but I couldn't agree with your political messages opinion any less.

Regardless of where he lives, I don't recall him ever giving back any of the cash from record sales.

The only reason Rage was any good is the same reason Audioslave sells records.

The political messages are definitely there.
And very potent.

I guess it's just a shame it's tarnished with hypocrisy eh?
Oh well.

Bob Dylan's no better :(

I know the political opinions are there, there's no denying that. Potent? I'd hardly call it that.

I agree with Demitri, good band with some bitchin' riffs (courtesy of the previously mentioned Tom Morello) however their political agenda does nothing in my eyes except give them a cool band name. However, my old band used to cover "Killing In The Name Of..." and I used to enjoy stepping up to the microphone to yell "F*** YOU I WONT DO WHAT YOU TELL ME" along with our singer. Ahh...them was the days... :D

No? Ah well.
I find it unusual that a band is willing to speak out against the government in any way at all. Nice idea... would be nicer if they weren't a bunch of capitalist hypocrites :D

And yes!! I used to be in a band and there really is nothing more fun than justifiably swearing loudly for a minute and a half :D

Is it just me or do at least half of the people here do music? I think there are three of you so far that were in a band...

I played in a punk band in 1980. Not very well, mind you.

I was a pro drummer for a couple of years and taught drums for around 10 years. I still do the odd session now and then. I sometimes run drum circles (djembe) - that's great fun.

Perhaps it's something to do with discipline in hobbies that require practice. This has been mentioned before about the absurd number of musicians/magicians on this forum.

On Jay Sankey's Very Best Of series he makes a joke about magicians being asked what instrument they play...most of us are quite prepared for that question.

Ecko - how do you find a band speaking out against the government unusual?

System of a Down does it. Aside from the obivous fact that the singer hates the United States and its' government - his opinions are also among the most idiotic I've heard.

Tool/Perfect Circle - Maynards' political opinions are all over the place.

U2 - Though they've moved more towards relief work, their messages have gone against government.

Incubus - They did it for one song. This died rather quickly. Apparently Brandon Boyd learned that it's often bad to call someone a megalomaniac when you are one.

Bob Marley was a political activist

Bob Dylan

There's many, many more. I don't see why Rage's activism so surprising.

Kati - I used to be in a band. Not anymore, though. Now I just play guitar as a hobby.

I don't find it surprising.
I was just curious as to whether Zack was a huge hypocrite or not.

I like music that has something to say about politics, but I also like it when they aren't pretending to be something they're not.
Just wondering if Zack fits into that category is all.

I don't want you to feel like your being attacked be Demitri and me here Ecko, but why do you consider Zack De La Roca the definition of RATM? There were other members in the band who were more than welcome to speak up if they didn't like what he was saying.

I try not to get too deep into the meaning's of other people's lyrics. Political righteousness is good and all but unless it's well written no-one will give a damn. And when it is written well, people often will just like the fact that it is written well and pay no attention to the political ranting going on (my hand is up with a loud verbal confession of: GUILTY). Whenever I've written songs I try to keep the lyrics written in a way that you can extract your own meaning from them and take something personal away from the song. Also, they can retain a personal meaning for me after i've written it too.

In fact just for a laugh, here's a link to some songs me and a mate of mine wrote some time ago (Glass People & Mistakes). This isn't the same band that did the RATM cover. This was just me and a mate of mine named Adam. Adam is singing lead vocals and playing keyboards and I am playing the guitar and singing backing vocals in both tracks. Both tracks were recorded live into my MiniDisc player and fed into my laptop to be made into MP3's. They're not brilliant and there's no bass or drums but we enjoyed it.

Edit: If there are any Data Transfer Limit issues and you are still curious then PM me.
