i think it's the best way you can learn. i do them for free for members of our juggling society.
the only drawback is the cost! but if you can find some cheap then do it

Magic tuition

I like them very much. As a young magician I was taken in by our local magician at the shop, who gave me extra hints, tips, and judged when I was ready to try new stuff. He was not interested in just selling more tricks, he really wanted me to learn. I have given paid lessons in the past, and now that I have taught at University for the past 15 years, I am keen to start teaching close-up magic to people. I am working on a new book on close-up and will use that as the main text. You will probably get some newbies who are not keen, but I do hope to be a mentor to some beginners like my magician friend was. Like any art, there are key things that can be taught, where it helps to get guidance at an early stage, rather than 'hunt and peck' for too long.

Hi,
I had my first lesson/session on Thursday.
I have to say its the best money I have spent to date, so many things as a newbie that you can't pick up from books and DVD's.
The main thing that I took away is how important the performance side of magic is.I learnt about practicing and rehersing an effect almost down to the word before performing it. This then allows you to concentrate on the presentation of the trick without worring what to say or what to do. This will allow you to enjoy yourself and gain confidence from each performance.
I also never realised the amount of physcology involved in magic, eye contact and body movement etc.
All in all it was very intresting and well worth it in my opinon.

Hope this helps.

Chris

Something I am adding to NUMS is a directory of magicians, tutors and performers. I'd be grateful to hear of anyone who can offer their services.

I give small tutorials to locals, and I've found it very rewarding.

Even teaching small things, and more importantly, teaching performance discipline, is very well received. After all, almost anyone can buy a trick, but to perform it well, you need to see it from the 'other side'.

I think they are indeed a great way / if not the best way for a magic student to learn. I was lucky enough to have my father working in the business to teach me.

I still learn't from books, videos, other magicians at magic clubs but the one on one jams I had with him taught me so much more.

Just my opinion :)

I never been to one but I know that anyone in Yorkshire could head to Merlin's Magic in Wakefield I think they do courses. My Uncle was in there a few weeks ago and Dynamo there with some others just teaching a few of his flourishes and showing off some tricks.

If you can't find someone to teach you, another great method is just to meet up with other magicians in your area and work on stuff together, that way you can help each other out with stuff.

Whilst we're on the topic, anyone in Surrey fancy doing this?
