Anyway - I stand by my statement at the start. It doesn't particularly do any of the forums any good to have threads like this.

Bannanafish, my intention when starting this thread was never to start a slanging match or dis any forum in any way.

My question was genuine and I was generally interested to know peoples thoughts as to why they use either forum.

I came across magic bunny by chance and after using Talk Magics search function couldn't find too much about it - So why not ask the question>>???

Dont be quick to judge!

GMD - when I said that it wasn't my intention to have a dig at you in anyway. I totally accept that the question was asked in good faith and you were asking for all the right reasons.

My point was that I have seen many similar threads to this on many magic forums and for the most part they do turn into unpleasant threads where one forum or another is given a roasting. I hate to see that happen for any forum as they all have their plus points. If you do want to find out about other forums and if they work for you, the only real way of doing it is to visit there and see for yourself.

Obviously the bias here is going to be TM (or at least you would hope so!) and it is geniuinely the forum that I personally prefer to discuss magic on, however I would hate to say anything deroogative about Magic Bunny or any other forum.

again though, I apologise if you felt I was having a go at yourself. I wasn't.

Indeed...

Maybe it's like a car.

They all do the job, in a slightly different way.

( Apart from that old Sierra I bought, which wouldn't do the job at all ).

TalkMagic always comes across as constructive.

And I'm sure other forums have their pros and cons also.

I've looked a quite a few forums and the only ones worth posting on are MB and TM.

Because MB is bigger there are more people looking for an argument and looking to critisise (not everyone), as a result, i think TM is a bit friendlier.

Cheers,

Most of the MB members that are here will know who I am, those of you who don't, well, I'm an administrator of MB.

I like Talk Magic. I can't get in here as much as I would like to for the same reason that dat8962 has mentioned - I'm just far too busy to keep up with both.

...but some things you can only expect help on from MB.

I'm not quite sure I understand that one...Whenever I surf the pages of TM, I find the responses quite helpful (one reason why I don't post much here - the suggestions are already much of what I would have said).

Magic Bunny used to be a fantastic forum. You could ask any question and get some very good responses unfortunately with every day it becomes more and more like the Cafe with people posting just for the sake of posting.

I find that to be disquieting.

I don't care what anyone says, I reckon the Mods on TM are far better looking!

Fully agreed. We are a bunch of mugs at MB, it's true.

...you decide which is right [and which is illusion*]...* hands up who knows where that comes from?

I used to know, but unfortunately fell off of my see-saw and my memory hasn't been the same since.

Anyway, the mods of TM are a quality group of guys. I don't think that any of them have the "attack dog" disposition that I have and I think the overwhelming feel of the forum is a bit friendlier.

But, and I admit this, I have gotten a bit thin skinned of late. For example, we just had a kid (14 years old) join our forums and put up a vid of an effect that he's selling. His effect is "original" in his own words. Except that it was already in development in 1985 and by 2001 the final (and best to my way of thinking) product was released by a talented young man who goes by the name Diamond Jim Tyler.

Had the kid put any time into actually researching his "original" effect, he would have a better effect as an end result. I have no patience any more for these kind of antics. I see a lot of this from the younger folks in magic these days.

But, is it any wonder? Magic is far too accessible. Funny, because Dai Vernon was lamenting that same fact in the 1960s. I wonder what he'd think of the instant download crowd...

Ah, well, Talk Magic is a great place and I won't waste my time comparing the two. You join both, you get what you can out of each and you become a better magician, a better performer and a more well rounded character.

The Magic Cafe? That was hurtful.

Take care y'all.

Mike.

Thanks for that post - very much the way we see things and I for one always work on the basis that MB and TM are complimentary rather than competitive. Also we both have weird senses of humour which the Cafe lacks utterly and completely  !

As for the 14 year old publishing - we've seen similar and it's very difficult to get folks to understand that Magic isn't a quick fix, a sudden and instant rise to fame etc. Even D.Blaine Esq. spent years in relative obscurity before becoming an overnight success! :D

The Title of this topic is wrong. There is no "versus". The facts are that there are alot of members who belong to both. If you post on both sites, you might find no answers from one, but lots from the other. The fact is, it is good that Magic Bunny or Talk Magic try to put the other site down.
You have to spend a bit of time and effort in getting to know the ways of each site. Magic Bunny may seem to have more arguments, but they have more posts, which can mean more help.

It's great to have 2 such good sites which, apart from some members who have, or feel hard done by, have a certain amount of respect for each other.

PS, when I want a laugh, I go to the Sin Bin on TM, Off Topic on MB.

When I want help or advice, I go to both sites, as I respect opinions from TM and MB.

I prefer bunny but just because I found that site first.

Alos I find the rules for getting into the restricted areas here a little ,well, restrictive.

Its difficult to discuss things openly. I also find that things are a littler more serious here than at the hutch.

The biggest benefit of this site is that Michael Jay isn't a mod. But then you've got Mandrake so I suppose all things equal out :D

Here?! You have to write an ... essay to get into the restricted areas over on MB! [Don't you?]

And it means it's all quality posts!

I find that strange - there aren't any rules here at all for MO access. The basic requirement is a number of quality posts, a reasonably well established period of membership, good reviews etc help a lot as do regular contributory posts. Not everyone gets nominated or invited into the MO areas but we do try to consider as many as possible in the limited time available.
