hernia op, eeeeeeek

Postby Larry » Jun 30th, '06, 13:08

yep, finally going under the knife on wednesday. then 2 weeks of doing pretty much nothing, expect my post count to increase exponentially (and I'm a mathematician, i actually know what that means!) from thursday onwards!
but, on subject, anyone else had the op? any advice from recovery would be nice, I'm going to go nuts not being able to juggle (or lift a pint glass, i'll have to drink halves or something) and stuff for ages!

...and, did anyone see the show about a guy who had it done without drugs? just under hypnosis? crazy guy. i want the drugs!

Ouch...never had the op myself (never had a hernia) but hope it all goes well for you!

And hypnosis is actually a very reliable way of anesitising (sp?!) someone, actually more effective than drugs in some instances.

I'd still go for the drugs if I were you

Join Amazon's DVD rental thing. It'll keep you entertained if nothing else.

As for recovery, the obvious stuff (know a couple of people who've had this op...usually a bit sore but nothing horrific) don't stretch too far, rest but don't lay in bed all that time...still need some *light* exercise. Good diet will help as with all health. Oh, and it might hurt a bit laughing/sneezing/coughing depending on where your hernia is...

I'm sure you'll be fine, but good luck anyway!

Mmmmm, drugs..... I mean, erm, yes, hernia operations are nothing to worry about but they do smart for a few days afterwards. Hopefully they'll keep you dosed up with poppy juice immediately afterwards, perhaps even with a magic button to self-administer the lovely stuff. When my sister had her endometreosis done, no one told her what the button was for so she was in agony until a nurse came along and pushed it. Then she was away with the faries and couldn't feel a thing. Ditto a friend who had an early heart attack. There aren't many times in your life when you're allowed to take massive doses of opiates, and it is doctor's orders, so... Wheeeeee!

Yeah, those pushy button type things are the business.

I've never had either a hernia or a hernia op, but it shouldn't be that bad mate - all they're doing is popping it back in and closing the hole!

Talking of anaesthetics etc, there's a combination of anasthetics/tranqs (I think it's ketamine and fentanyl, could be wrong though - darn it, we only did it last term! I should know this!) and basically they can do various bits of open surgery on you while you're still conscious - the only thing is it shuts off your natural breathing process, so it's something like this...

"How you feeling, Bob?"
"Great, yeah."
"Any pain?" [whilst opening up abdomen]
"No, nothing, I'm fine."
"Good, good. Er, Bob, would you just be able to breath for us a bit?"
"What? Oh, yeah, ok..."

 I think that's great! The wonders of modern medicine...!

lol - was this pun intended ??

QUESTION:
If we can sue McDonalds for making us fat and cigarette companies for giving us cancer; why can't we sue Smirnoff for all the ugly gits we've sh*gged ??

Wow, that IS wierd. :?

Good luck to both of you, hope it all goes Ok. Don't be too impatient to do too much too early, a friend of mine was like that and it didn't do him any good. He's Ok now but it took a while...

If you are going to be in hospital for a while I would suggest you try to get hold of some PAT test stickers.

This isn't quite as random as it sounds; they charge you for tv etc and won't let you use your own equipment as it hasn't been tested so if you happen to have someone at work who is responsible for that kind of thing then get hold of some so you can use your mp3 player or portable dvd player etc!
