Postby Jordan C » Nov 5th, '03, 22:51

Hey Guys

I've been looking around and I found a link for a good little tutorial on how to perform a 3 card monte. PM for more info.

By now most folks will have seen this - 17 hits at the last count - so you all know how to do it by now! There is a small problem here as it's an instructional item but in the open area and that might cause our host some problems.

Many thanks to Jordan for tipping us the wink on this one - I found it quite useful! However, I have to suggest that we now remove details of the link and perhaps Jordan could keep the details handy so, if anyone wants to see it in future, they can PM him and he can PM back  . Sorry about this guys but, at the moment, there's every reason to be ultra cautious!

oops sorry

I thought as it was a free instructional video openly available on the web it might be ok to post it. Any way if anyone wants to know the link PM me and I'll be happy to provide it.

Sorry guys

Jordon, that wasn't a real criticism of yourself, as as you say it is a readily available link already on the net, but you have to remember that a lot of non magicians troll these boards looking for exactly that sort of exposure, and we can't be seen to encourage that.

very nice trick though wasn't it...

I thought it was pretty cool, yeah. I see the point of non-magi's though. I shall bear this in mind in future and allow magi's to PM me for the links.

It is a great trick, the guy who's on the vid says he likes to show people this trick and then share the secret. He then follows it up with an ungimmicked 3 card monte and has them blown away!!

I haven't yet learnt an ungimmicked 3 card monte yet as to be honest, card tricks scare me (I'm clumsy sometimes and can find it difficult trying to follow sleights from printed instructions) but I do own DARYL'S ULTRA MONTE.

I put together the monte as shown in the instructional vid and showed a trusted friend. He was impressed and also shocked at how simple the deception was. BUT THEN I did the UM (which is gimmicked but subtlely) and he literally was blown backwards by it. Because he thought he'd now sussed all 3 card monte routines as using the "secret method from vid" he was dumbfounded to find the UM was just 3 single cards!!

Awesome surprise reaction from a friend who is usually fairly subdued in reaction to effects.

I think I'm gonna have to get some instructional DVD's on card tricks now, especially 3 card monte routines!

My main problem (apart from stupidity) with card routines is that I seem to always have more fingers than cards when it needs to be the other way round. So when I find a card routine that works for me I'm so grateful it's pathetic! However, I'm working on it and I'll get the hang of a few more routines soon, just wait and see! :P

If you want to leasrn all there is to know about the 3 card monte trick, and in fact numerous variations of it (gimmicked and otherwise) - then you could do worse that getting Daryl's "Daryl does the full monte" DVD.

http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/viewtopic.ph ... ight=monte

I found this absolutely fascinating to watch. I haven't mastered the standard non gimmecked version yet - which reminds me I must start practicing that, but this was a great dvd to watch just for the performance part of it alone.

One day - I will be able to do the 3 card monte. If nothing else it'll be a good source of income for when I retire :)

Whenever I get sufficient time, I have a look through RRTCM and Kauffmann's Basic Card Technique Video - the two are full of everything I need to know but I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that I'm simply not dexterous enough - or I'm just plain thick. For this reason, I happily indulge in routines using gaffed cards, fake cards, multiple cards and any other methods of cheating which makes me look as though I know what I'm doing - so far I've got away with it so please keep this to yourself, OK?!

Mandrake since your in B'ham, why not join the club in Stourbridge that meets on a Wednesday and/or Thu evening. That way you get hands on teaching on this sort of thing and it's only £10 an evening.
I've not been myself yet, though I have been shown a few of the moves while in the associated store. Gotta be worth a try though.

I've often thought about seeking out a club - the British Magical Society (Older than the Magic Circle!!) have their HQ not too far away. Main problem is time - not enough to go round and when there is some spare time it never synchronises with these sort of things. Thanks for the reminder though, I'll have to try and reorganise a few things one of these fine days!
