The Asher Twist DVD - by Lee Asher

Postby trickyricky » Jan 19th, '06, 19:57

I couldnt find a review for this DVD so thought i'd make one myself

They say:

"This is the best effect you can possibly perform with ANY four cards. The cards magically turn upside down and then right side up in the most visual way imaginable. This can be performed on the street, nude in the shower...anywhere!

Remember, this is the first time I've ever placed all the Asher Twist information on one DVD. Even if you own WELL DONE, you are going to want this. It takes you beyond the basic explanation of the Asher Twist and teaches you so much more." - Lee Asher

Cost

$25 + $3 p&p from http://www.leeasher.com/asher_twist.htm

Difficulty
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

2-3 - It is basically just 1 sleight put into a routine.

I say:

When i first saw this, i felt a bit sceptical. Yeah sure on the preview he shows all 4 cards front and back. And yeah sure they say on the website that none of the cards are gimmicked in anyway. But i still had this little niggly feeling that something was not quite right with the cards, or maybe that along with the DVD came a little gremlin type creature that turns the cards over for you in your hands.

I am very glad to say that with all of these fears, I WAS COMPLETELY WRONG!! All the cards are absolutely normal, any deck, any time, anywhere! although i dont think i would want to do it naked, in the shower for anybody (well, almost anybody). You could even do it with Pokemon cards if you so wished!

If you hadnt guessed, i love this effect. It took me a couple of days of practicing to get the move down properly. The bonus section on the DVD covers all fears that you may have over the angles involved (and to be fair, there are a few), as well as slightly different handling (only slightly) and some live footage of Lee Asher at one of his lectures.

Also, for the price, you only get the one effect. Which to me seems pretty pricey. But it will be an effect that you will continue to use for a very long time.

Overall

8.5/10, because of the angles and price

One thing to be aware of before buying this is the angly-ness of the effect - it's very angly. Note how all Lee's demo vids are always shot very top down.

You couldn't do it surrounded by any means and for this reason it doesn't suit my performance style.

It's a really great effect - but the reason it's so strong with no gimmicks comes at a cost I'm afraid.

Is it different from the teaching of Well Done Cooking with Lee Asher?

how new/old is this? the demo vid looks like he's a tv guy from the 70s.

it looks good, but quite exp. when there are other one trick vids like mercury that do similarly impossible things.

I was thinking of getting this, but it seems expensive for just 1 sleight stretched out on a whole dvd. Any more opinions ?
