Mixed reviews on coin DVDs

Postby AJ82 » Jul 4th, '06, 17:10

I am wanting to learn some coin tricks as I know very few at the moment. I have never really tried to learn coind magic and with problems I experience I was wondering if someone could give me some ideas about which DVD to get?
Some people say BoBo's along with his book, I looked aT Sankey's but someone said it is not for beginners and they are the only two I really know of so any ideas would be most appreciated as I don't want to get something that is far too hard and I don't want to get something that is not very good (I have amazing magic with coins and hate it).
Thanks

Alex

Revolutionary Coin Magic doesn't tutor you in the basic sleights of coin magic, rather it teaches some great effects that put the components of the art together extremely well. Good luck to you if you can learn coin magic from this DVD, but I couldn't. I've gone elsewhere.

If you want to learn how to palm properly in various positions, and learn the basic vanishes (puts and takes) etc, I would either start with Bobos (preferable) or Roths Expert Coin Magic DVDs (misnamed; volume 1 is Basic coin magic) if you must have something visual.
As a complete beginner, I would get Ian Kendalls Basic Coin Magic CD (it's very good and very cheap). After a couple of months, if you've developed a good classic palm (which is a total pre-requisite for pretty much anything - and doesn't come quickly) then start spending money on other material. That's what I'd do.

The are great effects on RCM as Dave said, but there are none of the foundations on there at all.

I would heartily recommend visiting Ian Kendall's site, and registering for his Virtual Sessions. You get the Basic Coin CD from the site plus a whole lot of other stuff. However Ian's Coin tutorials do not teach any routines; he shows the basics for some sleights.
Personally I give my vote to David Roth's DVDs.
I also recommend staying away from Bobo's book until you have the basics in place. There are plenty of routines in the book, but the teaching on the sleights is awful.
This is a very good site for Coins (it also gives reviews and comparisons):
http://www.coinvanish.com. The section to go for for the info you need is the Foundations section.

I have to respectfully disagree with this comment. "Modern Coin Magic" is the text many of us used as our basic introduction to coin work. Granted, some people learn more effectively from a visual medium, but to recommend staying away from one of the cornerstone texts in the art is questionable. "Modern Coin Magic" should be one of the first teaching tools purchased when pursuing coin effects.

Having said that, I find the videos to be very useful in reinforcing the techniques from the book. Along with the others mentioned, I'll also suggest the very excellent Michael Rubinstein "Encylopedia of Coin Sleights" DVDs.

Alex you could also look at the Al Schneider technique series or the one by Jason Dean And John Born which i cant actually remember the name of but i know Seige raves about it.... BUT having said that from what ive heard David Roth is the coin daddy!

Computer games don't affect kids; I mean if Pac-Man affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms, munching magic pills and listening to repetitive electronic music. - Kristian Wilson, Nintendo, Inc, 1989..
