Why buy when you may already have?

Postby Miles More Magic » Jul 11th, '06, 01:09

When I started out, I bought alot of gimmicks. I have stopped now, but many people buy the latest things out.

How many magicians look at the description of the effect, then look through their books or DVDs?

It may be that there is a way of doing it already in there, just waiting to be learnt.

If here isn't, you may find ideas in there to apply the new gimmick to. Instead of reading the routine that comes with it, find out if you can make a routine that you can be happy with.

I have been lazy in that respect, but intend to look at some of my unused stuff, to find out if I can use it in a way that I am happy with.

It could be interesting to find out if anybody has bought something, then found out they already have the details on how to do the effect.

An example is that I spent more on a gimmicked Royal Oil, than I did on MWCCIM.

Seems that laziness costs money

Note, this isn't a gimmick versus no gimmicks thread. Thankyou.

I bought a haunted deck not really knowing what I was getting, I was quite disappointed with what I got but for £6 what was I expecting??? I just went back to doing it with loops...

(not sure, but is this thread in the right forum? )

yeah I saw a haunted deck and was pretty sure you don't have to spend £6 as it teaches you in pretty much any book and you get a load of other effects too.

buying gimmicks (and seperate tricks) can seem tempting but you end up kicking yourself when you realise its in a book you already have or theres a simpler way of doing what the gimmick does (sleight of hand) I bought a couple of gimmicks but hardly ever use them.

Wasn't sure which forum to put it in, but thought it might be a "tip" to look through your books before you buy.

Thats my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

PS. Thought I had put it in misc. forum. Wondered why I couldn't see it in there.
