Well, you know how most magic instructional material is written by the pros - and usually for people with a half decent level of experience. How about coming up with a " beginner to beginner " e-book.

Seeing as most talkmagic members describe themselves as amateur hobbyists I think it would be a cool idea to put together an e-book, with contributions from both experienced TM members and TM hobbyists. Maybe not on tricks as such, just essential sleights, tips on handling cards, mis-direction etc. Things like that which the absolute beginner could pick up and learn alot from.

Being an e-book it would cost practically nothing to put together, and we could make it exclusive to NUMS.

so what you guys think?

(EDIT - copy of my post from lower down so people dont miss it )

Id rather have this as a guide for beginners by beginners... the idea being beginners will relate to it better. So while people experienced enough to have access to the restricted area are still welcome to contribute, id like lesser experienced people to take part. nor would this really benefit people in the restricted area much - being a guide for beginners an all.

doesnt matter how much experience you have, the idea is you may have found difficulty performing a certain sleight, but thought up a way to do it thats easier for you - thems the kind of tips id like to see in it.

( EDIT AGAIN )

Ok, who ever wants to take part can - if you think you have a good technique that others may benefit from just write out a description as best you can, include photos/diagrams if you like and either pm or email it to me and ill compile them all together in a pdf e-book. If a few people do something on the same sleight or move or whatever, ill put them together so the reader has plenty to work with to see what suits them. Everybody will be fully credited for their input and I WONT MAKE ANY MONEY OF IT.

I think its a good idea, but i dont think i would be able to put anything in there because im not very good at explaining things and i have never made up my own trick, so i would be putting somebody elses trick in there, which is copywrited. But still a good idea

Yes i think you should PM people asking to make a contribution to it, and then put it together and make it available to people on TM, but only the people that are in the restricted zone thing.

Not sure if this is the sort of thing you're after, but here goes:

Try to:

Buy a couple of books, including some "self working" ones. If you are just starting out, this will allow you to build up your confidence by being able to do some easier tricks, without spending a fortune on one trick effects.

Be realistic, you aren't going to be ready to perform for anyone for a while.

Be flexible with the genre of magic you want to perform. I ended up by concentrating on childrens magic, but this isn't what I started out to do. Your personality may suit one style better than another.

Make sure you practise until you can put on a complete performance for the effect you are learning. This includes scripting, angles etc.

Think of what you want from a routine of several tricks. Do you want it to include humour or to just go for effects, or a mixture of both? How are you going to link effects together?

Try to avoid:

Rushing to show your magic, whether to your friends, or to the public. You want to perform magic, not show some tricks.
On forums, I have seen people ask what they should buy for a show they are doing the next week. The simple answer is: nothing.
If you haven't got a show to put on, you wont make one in a week.
Learn how to say "no" until you are ready.

Copying patter. Use it straight from the instructions while you are learning by all means, but work in your own personality to it. Change it to suit you, remembering to write ideas down. Think of ways you can change it to make your performance origional.

Tip:

Remember to know when to stop showing your magic.

Some people just aren't interested, so don't push them into watching you.
If someone is ruining your and other peoples enjoyment by heckling or being abusive, stop.

Remember also, for those that are interested and entertained by magic, can become bored after a while. the old saying is " to leave them wanting more."

Enjoy your magic.
