I'm gonna levitate.

Postby Batman » Jul 13th, '06, 18:23

I'm gonna make an illusion where I levitate. Yeah, you heard me 8) I'm gonna need something to hold me up, like a rope or something. Anyone got any ideas for me for the materials, and how to tie the rope around me? And don't laugh, cuz I really think this is gonna work.

greetings.

How about a pole stuck where the sun rarely gets to shine?

Hey, it will hold you in the air... if you paint it black and do it on an all black stage no one would be able to tell.

Now, for your second post you can go introduce yourself so everyone here knows a bit about who you are, your honest interest in magic, how long you've been "studying" it, etc.

how rude.

Postby Batman » Jul 13th, '06, 18:31

Why are you so rude? Why so much anger? If you don't have anything better to say, it's better to shut up.

Firstly, we don't give away secrets. If you come to us with a video of you performing a finished illusion, we'll help you improve it, but we won't help you construct it.

Secondly, if you read the forum guidelines, you'll see that we expect an introduction including your level of expertise in magic.

Barging in makes you look like a bit of a knob, and the locals tend to react badly.

Besides, levitation is so over.

Spot on couldnt have said it b etter myself, if he read the rules he would probably find he is in the wrong section as well, but there you go.

Also i think the only thing levetating is this thread into the sin bin

Guys, whilst he should introduce himself etc. etc. I think that this is just a fellow with an interest in magic - probably relatively new to the art, who wants something he can do to his friends, and knowing nothing about levitations took the most obvious answer and approach.

Batman, it's probably better if you don't try and do a DIY job Peter Pan Stage Show kind of levitation - otherwise it might play out as follows:

As requested, Batman's friends enter his garage to find Batman hunched over slightly at the waist, spinning in mid-air about three feet above the ground. The pipe above him is myseriously starting to buckle.

Batman: Hi guys...

[/i]

There really are some serious practicalities you need to consider with that levitation and the most important one is safety.

If you want to levitate then the best way to go about it is to do something like Kings Rising or whatever - there have been a couple of posts on things like this recently on the forum so a search should give you some guidance!

Now that Batman has been slapped a bit and cardza managed to turn things back around I'll give a real two-pence perspective on things...

No one in their right mind just runs out and builds a Levitation or any major illusion, it takes years of book study as well as hands on application to understand the art and science of creating such things in a way that is safe for all involved as well as practical to the kind of markets you are planning to work in. I'm betting that you don't know the difference between an levitation and a suspension let alone all the variations of the distant past not to mention those of more recent times. Have you read the Sharp Encyclopedia of Levitations & Suspensions yet? How about the Byron Wells Illusion Plan Books? or the Paul Osborne Illusion series? Rand Woodbury? Stinemeyer?

Does it sound as if I'm talking greek to you?

I'm not making fun of you but I am trying to make a very important point; to learn magic requires you to invest time as well as money. We all have to pay our dues in this way and though we may luck into certain opportunities as things unfold in life, we still need to keep abreast on things and KNOW our craft.

Before you build or buy an illusion... any illusion, you need to know if or not it is practical to your circumstances as well as your style of performance. Levitations/Suspensions in particular are the most unforgiving bits of business you could ask for. Most all of them have angle as well as lighting issues and in some instances it's up to you and your own physical strength, as to if someone seems to float in the air or not. So slow down and get familiar with the various basics first, then you can start moving in the direction you want to go...

BTW... (and I know this is going to gross out many of you) I did a spot for a convention known as the Hell Fire Club here in the states; it is a Gay Man's S&M (Heavy Leather) type of convention and though I won't go into too much detail, my original suggestion with the black pole noted above, was kindof sortof put into use... There's nothing like floating a complete nude human being six feet into the air and having no possible means of concealing the devices people expect to see.

i dont know, it sounds like he was trying to conceal it...

now, back on topic:

batman, if you want to develope a levitation illusion, the best thing to do is to study all of the preexisting ones that you can find. buy and perform them.

And why do they post such general threads in the 'Magician Talk' section? There's a sticky which clearly spells out what this area is for yet I've just spent over 30 minutes moving recent threads out if here into Miscellaneous, Support and Tips and just about every other section. I do wish people would stop and think before posting - are they in the right area, are they asking for something which they could find via the Search Function, are they taking into account Forum rules and policies? This thread is now moved as well  !
