1. The key is supposedly haunted, and as mentioned, moves via 'mysterious power'. For me, part of the effect's strength is the suspense as the spectator is staring at the key in your palm, waiting.
2. A mistake which I see made quite often with this effect is the hesitation and repositioning of the key in the palm. You should practice the effect to an extent that you place the key in optimum orientation without hesitation—otherwise, something looks a little suspicious.
Overall, it's a powerful effect, but like all 'pocket miracles' it should be played down and let the EFFECT do the hard work... I noticed you showing the solidity of the key by banging it etc... personally, I don't like this approach as usually overstated proof is a sign of guilt. Which in this case isn't true, as the key is 100% examinable.
