Audition Help

Postby Darth Psycrow » Jul 19th, '06, 23:27

Hi Guy, just a quick one (which will probably turn out to ba a long one).

I'm wanting to join my local magic club, the only problem being that I have to audition to join.

1. What sort of performance would I need to do.

2. How long would it need to be.

3. Will I have enough tricks to do a performance.

And

4. How do I stop from cakeing my underwear in brown stuff  as I am only used to doing the occasional trick for one or two people that I know at a time not an audience.

Told you It would be a long one.

Cheers

Neil

There have been lots of threads like this before...

1) Whatever you find most natural - so long as it is well structured and well-routined, and is something you enjoy doing, it doesn't matter.

2) Your club will usually tell you this.

3) Depends on how many effects you know! I am a big fan of the rule of three, although this really does depend on how long you have got to perform.

4) PRACTISE and know your effects really well, and go out and try performing for people you might not usually perform for. Maybe Mrs. Jones in the post office (if you, er, live in the 1950s lol :D) - experience is key and helps to build confidence.

Good luck and let us know how you get on!

well, just a few month back I got invited by a forum member to go for an " audition " at my local magic society. I never went ( bottling out pretty much for the same reasons ) but heres the advice I had been given.

Dont think of it as an audition, afterall your not auditioning to be in a show or anything, what they want to see is that you have a basic knowledge of what you do, and that your entertaining thats all

dont worry about trying to fool them, its most likely they are experienced and know how to do the effects your performing anyway, they're looking at wether you can perform it at all not at if you can fool them.

itl probably last about 10minutes or so, so come up with a routine about that long, nothing fancy, nothing new, just good effects that your well practised and competent in.

DONT SHOW OFF. As I said stick to effects you know better than the back of your hand, and try to avoid doing anything to fancy just to try and impress them.

usually 8 to 12 minutes is the norm

as stated, it's an audition just to show that you can do a few SIMPLE things.

Select three, of four (AT MOST) routines and add variety if you can.

Everyone's nervous - it's expected.

It's not really an optical illusion - it just looks like one!
