D'lite?

Postby TylerD » Jul 20th, '06, 06:24

Sorry for making another topic guys. I feel like an idiot lol but as previously said I have never used much gimmicks before other then cards. I am a card magician with a few coin effects as well and the odd TT trick here and there. Just yesterday I ordered the D'lite pair (green). I heard its amazing to do in the dark. From what I saw I thought I had it figured out how to do it lol. It looked simple and only one explanation how to do it. But then I looked and it says requires 30 mins of practice. Does that mean 30 mins on how to use it? Or 30 mins on technique etc... Sorry if you cant answer that without spilling the beans too much. Im just curious. I guess Ill just wait to see haha.

Strange it said you need 30 minutes, most gimmicks or packet tricks say you can do it either straight out of the pack, or within 5 minutes.

There is no minimum or maximum time. Follow the same rules as you would learning anything else in magic. Spend as long as you need to practice technique, performance and script.

Manufacturers put down that you don't need long for the same reason they always say it is the greatest thing on earth. They want to sell it.

I wonder why in the world they would market it like that. Anyway, when I was in Vegas a couple years ago, I saw an eleven year old toying with them in a shopping mall (walking through the mall with them), so he must have bought it there and wanted to give them a try right then and there.

Looked pretty convincing to me, but I know how the trick is done and what it consists of. To a laymen, it would probably be a pretty astonishing trick if performed well.

I heard its amazing to do in the dark.

This would probably be the best condition.. nightime, dim room, complete eerie darkness, whatever suits your fashion. At your next get-together with some friends, ask to dim the lights and freak them out.

I'm guessing the 30 minutes the manufactuer is speaking of may include showing your hands free of gimmick, then the technique required to obtain and initialize the gimmick unknowingly right before your spectators' eyes, plus poper clean-up in the situation they would want to see and touch your fingers.

I'm guessing if an eleven year old can operate it, you dang well can too. Most of the time, a laymen will be fascinated by the trick, but will most certainly want to inspect your hands/fingers (visually/kinesthetically) to figure out how it's performed. But with proper practice of technique (the 30 minutes you eluded to), you can walk away leaving your spectators' stunned, because you can appear to be clean before and after performing the trick. The eleven year old obviously couldn't do that if asked for closer inspection.

That's because there's a difference between waving them about and getting them to look like magical lights being blown out of your nose, etc. About 30 mins in front of the mirror to get your technique down should do it.

Hmmm

You can USE them straight away, for sure.

But you certainly won't be able to perform much with them except waving them around wildly and hoping someone is impressed.

Learning and putting together a little routine for the D'Lites is going to take practice—in front of a mirror at least. Oh, and a little creativity and thought sprinkled in too.

30 minutes in my opinion is about right. But it's 30 minutes well spent.

Pulling them straight out the box and expecting to be able to do something impressive is sadly a little misguided.

The advice is to learn how they work, and then learn how they look to others. A mistake I've seen made is people forget that the layperson should see them as balls of light at your fingertips—not some 'ET PHONE HOME' glowing digit phenomenon.

It's far too easy to tip the gaff and look like a plonker unless you practice:

1. How to hold your hand to look natural
2. How to angle your hand to make the EFFECT look like you're holding balls of light
3. Loading and ditching the D'Lite whilst keeping the orientation of the gimmick correct... nothing worse than having your nail on the wrong way round !
4. Synchronisation: to give the effect of one light when using a pair, you need to practice so that there's continuity when passing from one hand to the other. Another horrific giveaway is seeing no light or both lights simultaneously
5. Variation: doing the same pass from hand to hand 30 times in a row may get a bit boring. Consider variation... use things around you and interact with them. Think about what the AUDIENCE is perceiving.

A video camera or mirror should be listed as 'an essential purchase' with any D'Lite buy ;)

I agree with all of the good advice on here and would add that you don't in my experience need to get too hung up about using them in the dark. OK, bright sunlight is not going to help you but last weekend I used mine in a restaurant in the middle of the afternoon. They do glow quite brightly.

The reaction I get from the from adults and children always seems totally out of proportion to what they are but I am not complaining about that.

Thanks for the tip guys. Its not the practicing im worried about lol. When im focused on something I practice for hours on end. Maybe Im all wore out from practicing cards and coins too much haha. But Ill deffinitely give it a go with the D lites. It will be interesting to get into some new gimmicks especially a TT. Ive never really used one of those either. Wow I suck.
