Second Deal Help

Postby darrenkarp » Jun 28th, '06, 12:49

Hi all,

This is my first post so please go easy on me!

I'm trying to learn the second deal sleight but despite watching my Rene Lavand DVD I simply can't get it.

Does anyone know of a decent practice method / regime?

Many thanks
Darren

hello good evening and welcome...

i've not seen that dvd, and there are plenty on here who will give you better advice than i, but even so - maybe use a neck-tie second deal instead, take some of the pressure off yourself til you feel more confident...

or 'expert at the cardtable' book, and i think 'phantoms of the card table' has something in the back about it...thoroughly good book that is..infact, buy both if you haven't already...

apart from that, just get a mirror and practice til you get the knack and use of the thumb...

oh and go and say hello in the Intro's section!

thanks very much for the reply....that was fast!

I've never heard of a necktie second deal. Perhaps you could enlighten me a little?

I should have said that the Rene Lavand second deal is one handed (quite handy really as he only has one arm!).

was he also a bandit?

In that case, i think Jay Sankey covers it on a couple of dvds, though my memory is shocking and i cant remember what one...

...neck-tie is the cowardly magician's version of the brass-necked card sharp's second deal...but very handy and simple...

ooh and Elmsley's Diamond Cut Diamond effect...

Phantoms at the card table definately will do the trick..and quite possibly Expert Card Technique by Jean Hugard & Fred Braue...

I find books hard to deal with. Videos are much better in my opinion. Any links to any downloadble videos?

Try reading "Second To None" by Simon Lovell. It is the DEFINITIVE work on all kinds of second deal.

Is it downloadable? Nope. It's not a video, it's a pretty complicated book, for a pretty complicated sleight. If ever I have to use the phrase "The Real Work", then this book would have to be it.

Go forth and read! And you know what? You'll be doing stuff that the Ellusionist gang of video downloaders have never even heard about. Trust me, I used to work in a magic shop. Reading is the way forward. Stop being so d&*%&$ lazy! lol

Liam.

I am a big fan of books but if you want a really good DVD resource to learn this kind of thing you should check out Daryls encylopedia of Card Sleights DVD's. Volume 7 has the second deals on it.

best wishes,

Andy

The second deal...good sleight.

As someone mentioned, yes, you can learn it in "Phantom of the Card Table", the one by Gazzo and Britland, "Phantoms of the Card Table" is better, plus a good book. On the other hand, I don't particularly recommend Walter Irving Scott's handling for two reasons. First, it serves a function you most likely won't use (his master system). Second, the grip is a little less than ideal.

Expert Card Technique teaches two versions, though they are somewhat dated. Ed Marlo's "Seconds, Centers & Bottoms" teaches many methods. "Expert at the Card Table" teaches one, though it isn't ideal in most senses. Allan Ackerman, in I believe volume 2 of his Advanced Card Technique DVD series teaches a number of methods.

In terms of a video, there are a few second deals featured on the trailer video to give you something to watch. You can of course also purchase demonstrational DVDs such as Richard Turner's "The Cheat".
