Books. I'm old school when it comes to learning. I want to get the gen then sit and play until I'e got it right for me. I've got a few DVDs, but I end up just copying what I see rather than learning and making something my own.

This post has been done many many times before...I can't find one of the topics now though :).

Anyway, my opinion would be that DVDs are better for sleights and books for routines/effects: a book can't show the sleight in action so you have to deduce it from a series of pictures whereas a DVD tends to serve up an entire routine so none of your own personality is left in it.

I have voted for Books although Ecko will scorn me as we were actually talking about this last night. I think dvd's (as said previously) are better for learning sleights etc because, in my case at least, I find it easier to learn from a picture in that way. Perhaps a book could have photos but the whole motion would be in a dvd and with a sleight it makes it easier to mimik.

However, books allow you bring a personal touch as with dvd's I think many, without knowing, would mimik things too much and its left without any of your own personality. I try to use dvd/film etc to learn sleights but I prefer books when actually learning effects/tricks and routines.

(which was what i was trying to explain last night ecko)

I have DVD's and books. I will echo the words above about learning sleights better from DVD's. I do find though, that when I look through books, I can sometimes join a couple of ideas together to come up with a different way of doing something. It might not be new, but it just isn't done the way people learn it. This makes a more origional routine. I don't tend to be able to think the same way when watching DVD's.

I have, therefore, gone with books, although I will use both.
