I'd agree with Breaking The Law. Coincidentally I had it on in my car on the way to work this morning!

aaah whole lotta love...well, did you know jimmy page and percy were huge fans of Small Faces? On the Small Face's first album there's a track called You Need Lovin'...and Plant was such a huge fan that gulp he 'used' the phrasing for Whole Lotta Love - the "woman, you need love..." phrasing in it (before the big drum break, and its just his vocals)...

..what i nerd...

anyway, some of my favourite riffs are:
Somone's House is Burning - Jimi Hendrix
Flowers - Rotary Connection
Barabajal - Donovan (with Jeff Beck)
I take what i want - The Artwoods (had John Lord from Deep Purple in it)
She's so heavy - The Beatles
The Hero and the Madman - Thin Lizzy
Had to cry today - Blind Faith

i'll shut it now, or i'll go on all day...

When it comes to rock sax solos, "Will You" by Hazel O'Connor really does leave the others standing. Utterly lush.

Trivium have some great riffs. Especially Pull Harder on the Strings of Your Martyr. I hear that their new album will have some really great ones too. As well as that FNM's Epic, Mastodon's Blood and Thunder...those are my favourites at the moment.

Jumping Jack Flash - Rolling Stones
Tie Your Mother Down - Queen
All Day And All Of The Night - The Kinks
Owner of a Lonely Heart - Yes
Li'l Devil - The Cult

And a keyboard riff: Jump - Van Halen

Another vote for Whole Lotta Love.

Glorious, sweet-singing, melodic solo, but not really a riff. A lot of people are choosing lead-guitar lines rather than genuine riffs.

I see what you mean but when Brian May's guitar kicks in it's as distinctive as any others mentionned (which are all great by the way  ).

It's just that all of the other guitar riffs are at the beginning whilst May's is at the end

According to Wikipedia, a riff is:
A repeated chord progression, pattern or melodic figure, often played by the rhythm section instruments, that forms the basis or accompaniment of a rock music or jazz composition.

The only accompaniment in WWRY is the percussion.
