New Introduction

Postby Newb2Magic » Jul 27th, '06, 21:03

Hi Everyone!!!

I am a complete newbie here. I have been inpsired by magicians all my life. I was introduced to magic by a clown at a party when i was a child and have loved it ever since. I was privelaged to go to a live show when Copperfield toured the US as a child. I have since seen several of David Copperfields TV Shows, and a small amount of Criss Angel's and Blaine's stuff. I am here because I want to do something fairly different. I want to learn magic to use for Christian evangelism. I know of several people out there doing this sort of thing. I love to tell people about Christ and I love magic. I think it would be awesome to use the two together. So as a complete new person to magic who knows nothing. I am looking for a place to start, advice, and help along this journey. I have a video camera and can video myself doing tricks for criticism and tutoring purposes if anyone is willing to help. So my first question is this. Where do I start? What books do I get to read to start my library. What magicians do I study? What videos do I watch? I am very excited to find this forum because it looks to be a place where people help out. I look forward to meeting you guys and getting your advice. Thanks. :D

Hi and welcome!

Most of the Gospel or Christian magic effects I've seen on offer seem to be variations on traditional magic effects but with some changes to suit the presentation - cards tend to have the Jokers replaced by Lucifer, Queen of Hearts replaced by Mary and so on. Google will throw up a lot of possibilities and sources but have a look at http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/ftopic11561.php for some basic advice. Check out the books referred to and just adapt the routines to suit your style and purpose. Most of all, just have fun doing it your way!

Welcome to TM!

Have a look around you will find lots of posts about where to begin - generally speaking Tarbell and Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic are a good place for general magic, and Royal Road to Card Magic is good for Cards, Bobo's Modern Coin Magic for coins and 13 Steps to Mentalism for mentalism.

P.S. I am sure you will regret that username in a few years when you are a skilled magical dude :D.

Sorry about the weired Quote tag. I am interested in street magic because of the street evangelism aspect. So any help in this area will be helpful too. Thanks.

I must admit I don't know anything really about Gospel Magic apart from what it is...maybe some nice symbolism with the Ambitious Card Routine though (a card keeps rising from the middle to the top of the pack)?

Thanks organi! I will check it out. There is a lot of things i can think about with gospel magic. Jesus taught in parables so i could use a trick and then use it springboard into a story, or levitatation for jesus walking on water. I just need to start learning the basics and be creative. I am really excited about it. Thanks for your help.

That's great. You've got yourself a goal. To work towards that, check out the beginner sticky topics, they'll give you some great links to check out for books/dvd's that will give you a great start. Once you have the basics you'll be able to channel your magic into what you want. i'll pm you with some ideas i've just bounced around.
