Actually, now that the purpose of the question has been clarified I think that this is a rather interesting topic me thinks, particularly after some recent posts on TM.
Personally, I don't condone copying. piracy, counterfieting or whatever else you want to call it. In legal terms it's called theft although few these days seem to consider it as such - or conveniently ignore this fact.
However, I do believe that a great many manufacturers of products don't do enough to protect their assets against this type of theft as the measures cost too much and they can offsset the projected losses by passing the loss onto their customers through increased price.
This is common in the retail industry, paticularly supermarkets. The moral is that ultimately we all pay indirectly, although the producer often sees very little if any of this revenue.
What you end up losing is having a choice as theft on an increasing scale will ultimately drive people out of business.
