Ok, I'm trying to learn card sleights like I said in my introduction. I did use the search button and I looked on google and didn't find too much, so I figured pros like you could help me.

Double Lift- Ok on my DL if I riffle I think that’s what it is called like where you use your thumb and go through the cards, I can do it fine. I would just like to do it so I can do a pinky break I think that’s what its called and do a DL.

Pinky Break- Do I just have to wait to my hands get bigger because they are quite small. Now in poker when I do chip tricks my hands don't matter that much innless I try and do a trick called butterfly, and that is where you put 4 chips in between your fingers.

Riffle shuffle- I have no problem with this.

Should I buy a book on this, I've just been going by the internet, or should I just practice more and more considering that’s how you get good at magic.

Check out Royal Road to Card Magic and yes, obviously keep on practising. The bold font is a little heavy going too, don't just rely on Google to give you your answers, immerse yourself in the magical world. The above book is relatively inexpensive and a great starting place for all card magicians.

Edited, well I checked it out and its $18.95, I will probably get that as soon as possible and start learning.

I cant see why you should have any trouble with a pinky break. What problem are you having? this might just be a lack of practise.

I think I'm going to be getting the royal road to card tricks book, not qutie sure yet. I want to get it. Anyway I'm not understanding how i should grip the deck and I cant really understand how to do it. I'm not really even sure what I'm supposed to do it. I've just beent rying to find out on the internet.

Royal Road will teach you all this stuff.

Hm...I do agree that Royal Road is very good - personally I would recommend, guess what, Born to Perform. It's a card magic beginners DVD that has descriptions of all the basic moves - pinkie break, DL, and so on. If you like to learn from books then RRTCM is the way to go, if you'd prefer DVDs, try Born to Perform.

I would like a dvd, but there more exspensive. With the dvd, I can see what there saying. Does the royal road have pictures in the book, to tell what there trying to explain.

Yep, fully illustrated. If you think that you're more of a visual learner and would fare better with a DVD than a book, to be honest it's probably best to save up for that first - at least you would get more out of it then.

Not sure if all versions are the same but the ones in my copy (Dover Publications paperback) are just pen and ink sketches rather than full illustrations. To be honest there’s more text to the page than illustrations and you need to bear in mind that this is an old book which is typical of the 1950’s and therefore doesn’t have the advantage of more modern methods of photographic reproductions etc. The wording is a bit archaic but, for the cost involved, it’s a worthy addition to any card magician’s library. You just need to work at it to get the full benefit – as many professionals have done.

I do my DL by riffling the back and feeling 2 cards. However I like the method of holding a break alot more but I never use it.

You could also try richard kaufmans basic basic card techniques i have this the teaching is very good, and worth the money, also as mentioned born to perform, and royal road is essential.

Then do you think I would be better off with a dvd, I'm a litte more of a visual learn its like 60visual/40reading.

This is Magicticks.co.uk's Basic Card Control video. It does exactly what it says in the title, teaching six essential techniques. There's also a rather impressive Quicktime demo on the page so you can see what you'll be able to do. The downside is that it's £9.99 (about $20).

Good question! There are many who would argue that RRTCM isn’t the easiest book in the world but there are also many who would say that it teaches everything you need to know for a successful card magic career. Like you I prefer things to be explained in detail if possible. I'd suggest you definitely get RRTCM and try it out as DVDs etc contain far less and/or cost far more. If you eventually decide to invest in a DVD or two then RRTCM will certainly provide valuable back up of sleights etc. I've only watched a few card DVDs and some of those I've seen weren't all that good at showing routines. It could be because I'm not much of a cardie or because I'm thick as two short planks. Someone recently told me that they found RRTCM to be much easier when two student magicians were working on it together. One spotted things the other missed and between the two of them they had very few problems in learning all they wanted to know.
