Escapology

Walter Gibson published two books on Houdini, one of which focussed on his escapes and includes some details of the more famous escapes. There is also a Houdini scrapbook that was published in the 1980s that had some really great stuff. Davenports sell a Houdini compilation for about £80.

If it's of interest, I did see a DVD set on escapology on Penguin some time back and it featured someone called Dixie Dooley (never heard of him before seeing this).

It's not really an optical illusion - it just looks like one!

There are a number of good places to start, some seem incredibly expensive!

You could do a lot worse than try "The Secrets of Houdini" by J S Cannell, it details lots of the rope and handcuff effects as well as some of the larger escapes too. I paid £8.99 from Waterstones and randomly it was in the biography section!

Dixie Dooley's DVD is quite good although I thought he played up the comedy angle of his escape too much - not a criticism just a personal taste really.

If you are an absolute beginner and want to get to grips with a really nice easy escape try "Electronic Release" it's a form of handcuff/manacle escape - Davenport's is the cheapest I've seen it at £26.

Dixie is a "legend" of sorts in the Vegas world of magic though he's not all that well known to the rest of the world. He did a kid's show for years on Tv and has worked many of the lower end rooms in Vegas off and on for decades. He's a great guy, a bit of a pack rat when it comes to antique magic (especially Houdini stuff) and has done the Vegas Houdini Seance every year for at least 25 years that I'm aware of.
