Tricks or Magic?

Postby andycoates » Nov 17th, '03, 04:06

I cant count how many times ive been asked this question, performing a routeine for people ive just met, and at the end they say, "so is it magic, or a trick?" first of all this gives me great satisfaction, if theyre asking this question, they have been drawn into the mystc of the effect and really cant belive what they've seen.
Ill give an example. A friend of mine owns a pub, and around easter last year he was holding a private party and asked me to go and do a few tricks around the tables for friend's an family who were invited. One momet which stood out for me was when i was doing the routeine where i stopped my pulse on one arm then the other and vice versa. The best part about it was that one of the girl's feeling my pulse' was a nurse. Well after finishing the impromptu routeine she asked the killer question, "So can you really controll the rate of your pulse or is it Magic" well i was'nt too sure what to say i had several options lined up in my mind, in the end i went down psychic route and made up a story about how after careful studying and preaperation, some people are able to controll different aspects of there being at will...bla ..bla..bla....etc.
I finaly left the table after doing a few more effects, leaving them with that one thought "So is it just a trick"????????? "or was that real magic"??????
That to me is Magic, leaving people in doubt about what they've just seen. When they think, "Theres no way he could have done that, but ive just seen it right infront of me less than 2 feet away, wow"
The look on peoples faces, the look of being entertained, the look of enchantment, my personal satisfaction of making people laugh and smile, that's not a trick, it's pure magic.

i get this a lot with the haunted key routine, and iv'e decided that based on my experience i say its all a question of perception, if you think its a trick its a trick.
if on the other hand you think its magic then it is, since a magic trick is both magical and a trick then your not lying are you.

since i perform it in the bliane style ie want to see something odd, i dont know if this will work but.... then there already geared up to question what they have just seen.

the other classic get out is to say lockness monster? fact or fiction.

woolies sells a street magic kit with ine included for around £14.
nice bag too.

people may know the secret if they fork out the money but its the presentation that counts, many people can make the key turn with minuets of practise but i bet they cant make the key turn in over three minuets and even stop half way.
anyway i mostly use it on adults to get gigs not the kids.

talking about selling classic magic for "cheap" i was flicking through the magic book section (past times an hobbies) in waterstones and for only 15-quid you can get "Mark Wilsons-Complete Course in magic" its an old style book but theres more than enough stuff crammed in there for the price!!!!
