Help With Magic Circle

Postby KardAdict » Aug 6th, '06, 21:17

People may have asked about this before.

Is it possible for a 14 year old novice magician to get into the magic circle? Do you have to audician? Is there a junior section? Am I just getting my hopes up for something that will never be possible?

Any help or comments would be greatly appreciated. And I appologise if I have just made an increadable stupid post.

Thanks in advance.

Joe.

If you go to the Magic Circle Site, you will find details on The Young Magicians Club.
It is open for the ages of 10-18.

Yep, it's a good group. And yes, you have to audition for the Magic Circle - as well as be recommended by two people in it who know you well, and do an audition and all of that as well as pay a not inconsiderable amount of money for the priviledge too.

I'm not sure that you have to pay for the Young Magician's club.

The cheapest annual fee is £40 for a student (must hold a current student card) who must be under 25. I would anticipate that you also wouldn't have to pay an audition fee.

Best make contact to confirm though.

YMC is £20 I think?

And no audition fee, but you have to pay a one-off joining fee for the Magic Circle and then depending on where you live an annual fee on top of that...right?

charging money is annoying, but I guess it is to be expected.

They do organise a lot of stuff for their members so it's only really fair

I certainly can't afford £20 a year, I know it's not a lot of money to most people but to a 14 year old with a single parent who spends the majority of their money on 'fags' (parent, not me) it is. So for now I'll stay at home, practicing sleights with an old deck of cards

You know, you'll probably become a lot more inventive in your magic if you can't afford to simply buy in other people's talent. Toward the back of Absolute Magic, Brown gets rather critical of people who attend clubs to get methods or who buy finished tricks in, likening them to stand-up comedians who buy videos of other comedians telling jokes for them to incorporate into their show rather than letting their own personalities drive the content and direction of their acts.

well I think very few people join the magic circle to learn other peoples tricks. I certainly wouldn't.
I own Absolute Magic too and just finished reading it the other day, and I have to say, I agree with Derren. (but I'm a big fan of his and probably biased) It is far better to come up with your own effects and not being able to buy other people's talent has probably helped me with that.

I'm currently reading Royal Road to Card Magic which I got for my birthday and coming up with new ideas and routines with the sleights from that (I got absolute magic last year).
