Radio Tricks

Postby PB » Aug 10th, '06, 01:28

Hi all. Does anyone know of any good sources for magic that can be performed on the radio? I have heard of a few books but their names escape me. Thanks for your help!

If you've got the skills then K.E.N.T. might be a good one, but don't even touch that in these circumstances unless you are very good at mentalism. There was a nice description (of effect but not method) of one that David Berglas did in 13 Steps to Mentalism, but maybe you could fashion a similar effect using the same publicity idea?

From what I understand (from banachek) that any good visual non-complicated effect coupled with a radio personality that is good with descriptions you should be set. As far as the books you mentioned, I am not sure. I haven't heard of them.

The one involving the lack of 'Drab coloured Scandinavian Pachyderms' would work on Radio.

I'm pretty sure i saw the delightful Stephen Mulhurn do this on some talk show a while back. i just can't deal with tricks where you have to think of a number then add 10 divide by 3 and all that Cal, it's like "now you should have a random number" (yeah, right!) i guess this is just my mathematician side coming out.

you could get a copy of Devil's PictureBook or Pure Effect and try out a verbal force.

Amen to that. There's something about maths that makes even the most intelligent spec act like a deer caught in headlights. Mental arithmetic tricks are best left well alone.

Radio Magic

Postby Allen Tipton » Aug 10th, '06, 13:46

:) There was a book called Radio Magic by, I think?, John Wade but I've no idea where you might find a copy. I have found that performing the trick to the interviewer, who will describe what's happening, works best. Also look up any tricks which are done via mobile phones. There may be ideas there. Some years back Kovari had a good Radio stunt. The interviewer chose a card, rang Kovari's home whereupon the answering machine apologised for Kovari's absence as he was appearing on so & so's radio programme and then concluded by saying "Oh, by the way, the card you selected was" and named the card.

I've been racking my brains to remember exactly where but I know I saw a book/booklet with several remote mentalist effects and one was said to be used by the author to get bookings from reluctant booking agents. All he did was to divine the agent's sign of the Zodiac over the phone with a few innocent questions. It's not exactly self working but it's logical and if presented right can seem to be very random and mystifying. I'll keep searching for a link or reference but it may take a while! Does anyone else recognise it from that description?

Hmm...

You have several options:

Direct Mind Reading and Mind Control Effects with Marc Paul and/or Astrolingua Created by Phantomas are some of the Star Sign effects out there.

That's the one - Marc Paul:
So You Can Read Minds...Prove It!

This is a real money making effect. Imagine this. A potential booker phones up and asks you exactly what mentalism is. You answer their question by doing some direct mind reading over the phone revealing their own star sign even though you have never met them!!!

Thanks, I shall be able to sleep tonight!

Radio Magic

Postby Allen Tipton » Aug 11th, '06, 10:47

:) There is a possibility that you could use Eddie Burke's 'Ultimate Tele-phoney'. This is the Tossed Out Deck & Tossed Out BOOK (several versions) See his booklet.I think the only adaptation you need do is to use a mobile phone for the interviewer to call up a person of his choice. It cannot be done over the radio phone as You need to speak to that person (without ANYONE hearing)before writing down any words they suggest.
Also, and I haven't yet bought this, Bob Kohler's 'Prime Cut'. the second effect given with this being a choice of card(over the phone) from the listener's own deck. Intriguing.
