Spinning a card.

Postby majortom » Aug 11th, '06, 15:22

Of all of the books, and DVD's i own, one of the flourishes which i have always wanted to learn but never come across is spinning a card. That is when a single card is held and spun on a fixed axis balanced on the middle finger. I've tried to do it but I'm doing something fundamentally wrong. Does anyone know what it's called and where i might learn it? or even some tips.

Thanks...

There was another thread on this a few weeks back, I think the answer was, inevitably, just lots of practice!

This was a pain in the backside to do. The guy that explained it to me did an awful job and I just couldnt do it. Someone else sent me a tutorial vid and I learnt how to do it.. just not very well. Once you've got the right "movement" down, its just practise. I couldnt do it properly for a while but I practised every day for a few weeks and now I can spin it for about 5 seconds. It doesnt sound like much but when I first started I couldnt get past 1 second!

A good dvd that teaches it is official poker card stunts by Rich Furguson. It also teaches a version of shapeshifter (in the dvd it's calles snap change for some reason). I learned it from this and after a day of practice during boring travel (2 planes and a 2 hour car drive) I was able to get it most of the time. It is cool, but I think doing it too many times (more than 2 times per medium length card trick) it loses it's novelty.

Currently Reading "House of Mystery" (Abbott, Teller), Tarbell, Everything I can on busking

I find that it works best to spin the card with your thumb AND forefinger. Also, depending on which hand you spin the card in, start by pushing the card the opposite way you plan on spinning it and then immediatly spin the other way (like a wind up).
