I borrowed a friends perfect pen a few weeks ago and the reactions whilst paying for drinks in a pub made me realise I needed one of my own.

I've got one now (thanks to Abrakazam for rushing me one when I called) but the gimmick in the lid is loose, which I noticed straight away as it rattles with a metallic sound. I don't know if this is normal (I don't remember my friends one doing that) or if it's a defect.

Not only does it rattle but if you shake it to see what the sound is, it almost falls out of the end of the lid! It only slightly hinders the trick if the pen is not insterted precisely into the lid, as it then doesn't go in straight, but this is only occasional.

Is this normal, or should the lid/pen be replaced?

I have the perfect pen which I use everyday and agreeably is a brilliant effect, however, my pen does not make any rattling sound nor does anything fall out of the lid making it non-examinable. Does sound like this has a fault.

Sound's a bit dodgy mate, never had anything like that happen with mine and i've used it almost daily for a couple of months.
Try comparing it with your friends or sending it back to see what they think.

Is it the pen falling out of the lid or the tip falling out of the pen ?
If it is the latter then you should send the pen back, if it's the former then the instruction that it came with tell you what to do.

It's the gimmick inside the lid that's loose. It doesn't fall out, but it rattles around and also stops the pen going in straight if you don't put it in exactly straight.

How do we know your not jo public?

To find out how its done, you must get a password by proving to the moderators of the site that you are a magician, write a review on a trick or something. Then, if your good, they'll let you in!

They do this, just so the secrets don't get out in the open, a sort of insurance! MAGICIANS TRUST THEIR OWN!!!

Once your in, their are some great step by step video and text guides to teach you new tricks, it's great!!!

YOU'D BETTER GET TO WORK THEN, WRITE YOUR REVIEW AND PROVE YOURSELF TO THE BOARD!!!

I'm even more confused now.
My perfect pen doesn't have a gimmick in the lid, only a gimmicked tip which is covered by a sliding sleeve ?.

But to enable you to slide the sleeve easily you push the lid onto the other end, and it's the gimmick in the lid that pushes the sleeve open.

It's possible that you'd never really considered the lid to be gimmicked because the gimmick isn't loose, therefore it's not noticable. On mine it is.

Any further discussion on this may well need to be done in the magician's section of the board. Please don't take it as a personal insult if you're not allowed on there, but the only reason it is in place is to maintain the illusion of magic, which most people like.

I work as a magic demonstrator and often have kids who will ruin the trick for the other spectators by just saying "I know how that's done, you use this... blah blah blah" which basically does spoil it for *everyone* else(magician and spectators - most spectators LIKE to believe, that's where the enjoyment lies).

The worst thing is when you get parents who will immediately tell their children the secret. This is not only rude but inconsiderate to the kids too. In fact, if they're the only people there at the time and the kids are still of 'believing' age then I'd probably say something like "oh I suppose you've told them Santa doesn't really exist too?" - nasty of me maybe, and doesn't really ensure repeat custom, but considering they were probably there to watch not buy anyway then if they're gonna spoil my secret, I'll spoil there's!!

Sorry for the off-topic rant, but it had to be said! That's why the magician's only section is there. It benefits everyone.

Just a note on your off topic piece.
As an experiment, I challenged a big mouth to keep his mouth shut to which he agreed, just to find that he actualy couldn'y help himself.
It seemed as though he suffered from a deep seated inferiority complex and therefore felt obliged to attempt to appear knowledeable in front of the other spectators.
sad really, but it goes to show that there is nothing you can do but move on to people who enjoy magic.

I've been wondering which pen penetration is best for your money? I'v heard of Perfect Pen or Pen thru anything etc. Which one would be best to buy and how much is it? All will be appreciated. Thanks,

I've got John Cornelius' Perfect Pen which is beautifully made and works like a dream except for one occasion last week when I was on holiday in Tenerife. We'd been to a restaurant for a meal and as I was paying the bill with a brand new 50 Euro note I decided to have a bit of a laugh with the waitress and produced my pen and asked her to sign the note. I've performed the effect dozens of times with no problem but on this occasion I got a bit careless and with a great flourish proceeded to rip the 50 Euro note to shreds much to the horror of the waitress and the amusement of everyone else in the restaurant!The embarrassment to myself will teach me not to get too cocky and over-confident in future. My only complaint about the pen is that the pocket clip has broken off but the gimmick is perfect. Does anyone else have any embarrassing experiences that they would care to share?

I should have said 'embarrassing experiences relating to magic'!!
