I have one question :D.

As some may know, I work at my restaurant sometimes as a magician and do some table hopping. I'm just wondering what you guys say when you approach the table.

I just say "Hi guys. You guys wanna see some magic?" Then I introduce myself and my cards lol.

Other ways?

Learn the match production from Jay Sankeys No Card Tricks and steal his patter.

"Hi my names Jay and I'm a magician. You know the best thing about being a magician is that if I see a pretty lady at the bar with a cigarette I can just go up to her and produce a match..." etc etc.
great trick, and I reckon would work wonderfully as an opening line!

Worth a try

You wont find much better anywhere and it's nothing - a rigmarole with a few bits of paper and lots of spiel. That is Mentalism

I'm against taking other peoples patter for 2 reasons.

1. This is one of the few parts of magic that is truly individual, a lot of magic tricks get repeated over and over and it's the patter and presentation that makes it individual and amazing each time. If everyone just kept "stealing" (such an ugly word i prefer borrowed or aquired) other performers patter then magic loses it's art status and just becomes another cheap Gimmick available from Ikea.

2. Your patter is what makes you an individual performer i believe every magician (be they pro or hobbiest) should take pride in having an individual act and not just try and copy a big name magician so other magicians will think they are cool (by the way they won't)

As for the opening line for resturant magic. You can't just think of an individual line. Even if it is just for 5 minutes you have to have a show, a beginning a middle and an end. that means that your opening line has to fit with the style of the show and start to build the mood you want to create. There is no point trying to be a big scary magician if your wearing a clown suit

I try and create my own patter, but I do 'borrow' some of it to help the story along.

I'm actually trying to think up some patter for the Cannibal Kings as we speak, as the patter I am using just doesn't flow to my liking.

Anyway, I think the best routines are ones that appear moveless, such as a good Cups and Balls routine, or a brilliant example Oz Pearlmans ACR.

Now, I know that all sleights should be and are invisible, but some tricks do not appear moveless, such as the Jazz Aces for example.

I'm probably dribbling rubbish all over your screens, so I'd better stop now ;)
