Palming

Postby martingouin » Aug 22nd, '06, 03:21

Ah, I don't know... I'm having a hard time practicing it like Jay Sankey shows to do it with the pinky (you certainly know what i mean). I'm wondering, all of you that does card magic, is it an important move for you or you feel that you can live without it?
Thank You
Martin

You can "live without" any sleight but you restrict yourself. Palming is one of the most useful sleights in card magic. Any effort you can expend to master it will be well repaid.

My advice is to keep at it. I learned it from the Royal Road to Card Magic.
Another good source is in Vernon's little book entitled "Select Secrets" under the heading "Topping the Deck"

as Mr. Lewis says, Royal Road will provide the answers...its just a case of practising...

i would also recommend the side-steal once you've gotten the knack of the top palm...lennart green amongst others will be worth investigating on that...

I found that the difficulty with palimg isn't so much the technique - the difficulty is not looking guilty while you're doing it.
I think a large part of palming is about when you do it - your timing, misdirection etc.
I found the following 'essay' quite helpful:

(although I'm no expert at card magic)

I agree with everything said.

First realize that it isn't difficult. You just haven't learnt it yet. Once you learn anything it become easy.

Second practice it as much as possible. Do it in front of mirrors and watch all of your angles. Take not of your bad ones and work out how to make them work for you.

Third, never give up.

I remember when I first read (probably shouldnt name the trick, but imagine its name is here :) ) It required only that I do a lateral palm and I couldnt do much of a regular palm. I tried for a few days and then moved on.

Funny enough, one day bought the Lennart Green series and when it came to the Snap Deal I spent a day practicing it. I mastered it within a couple of days and as a result ended up mastering lateral palming. So I mastered 2 things that seemed impossible for me, and in a very short amount of time.

I think my point is, they were only daunting tasks because I made them so. Dont get me wrong they aren't easy. But you sure as hell arent making them easier by thinking their harder.

You should deffinatly keep working on your palming. It isn't the greatest sleight, but it will be very helpful in and can be used to create amazing effects.

I learned the palm you're talking about from Sankey and I now use it as my main method for palming. It did take a while to get down but once you get it you wonder why you couldn't do it in the first place, kinda like everything in life. Just keep on plugging, I'd say it took a month of sporadic practice to get mine usable.
