Newbie magician advice (also Raven and Svengali decks)

Hello all,

I'm new-ish to magic. Been doing things for a few month now and got a few tricks nailed. I mainly use self-working tricks to entertain at the moment while i still practise to master sleights of hand.

I am trying to go down the close-up/street magic route and perform mainly card and coin tricks with the odd illusion trick maybe thrown in too.

Do you have any recommendation on books (single complete guides preferably rather than 8 different books) or videos/dvd's which help to gain fluid and relaxed card control so it doesn;t look clumsy and looks completely natural. I have the odd sleight of hand trick i can perform like the 3 card monte but i can;t help but feel a bit clumsy when doing it even though everyone's always been surprised and never guessed what I'm doing or come anywhere near (which i love! lol).

I am also looking for a Raven like gimmick which can be used with short sleeved shirts and/or t-shirts without too much difficulty. Not only that but i also need it to aid in vanishing cards as well as coins and cigarettes etc as i have a few routines thought up already for when i get it. Any recommendations without being too harsh on the wallet!?

And, last question, honest! I'm looking for somewhere that sell requested (rather than random) force card bicycle svengali decks in the UK. It seems like i can get them delivered from the USA with any force card i want but in the UK most shops seem to say that it will be random and i can;t request a specific force card!?

Any help, advice or recommendations will be gratefully appreciated!!

Thanks all,

Gav.

I do have a long post on here somewhere about this!

but in short!

Many Ravens are purchased and hardly ever used.

Books: Royal Road to card magic, Moden coin magic,

DVD: Royal road to card magic and born to perform

Hello :)

there is actually a sticky thread in the Support & Tips section (this section). ] But here it is anyway http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/ftopic11561.php.

Basically for cards you want the "Royal Road to Card Magic" book, or/and if you prefer DVDs "Born to Perform Card Magic" is very good also. If you are into coin magic then get the Raven if you must, but really you should get Bobo's "Modern Coin Magic" book. You will get far more from that book than you will from the Raven.

When i first saw what a raven was, i was very dissapointed.

Although a very powerful effect (in my opinion) for what it is, they cost alot!
I suppose you pay for the effect but....
