Best coin vanish..

Postby popcorn » Aug 21st, '06, 23:17

Right, I was looking at three different coin vanishes - The Raven, Melt, the M5 and Revolution, and they all looked great.

But, I can only buy one... Which would you guys recommend?

My advice with coins (though I know very little about them) is the same as with cards: buy Bobo's, learn most of the stuff in it, perfect some routines, go out and perform, and only then start to get into the gimmicky/one-trick-pony vanishes.

Of course, if you have read Bobo's then that doesn't apply. Please ignore it. I like Revolution most because it's impromptu and can be done with anything the right size. It is a bit of a 'kick yourself' moment when you look at it though.

Revolution looks great on the demo video. I had no idea how it was done.
However, i saw a video of someone performing it, and he did it ok, you could not see what was going on, but at that moment it became so clear to me how it was done.

To try it out i showed some friends the original demo from Ellusionist to see if they could figure it out, but they had no idea then.
Then i showed them the the other video. 4 out of 7 had a good idea of what was going on then.

So I'm a bit mixed up about Revolution. I think it fools about 50% of the people and 50% not.
I don't think i can say what it was that gave it away, without this post being moved to the sinbin ...

And maybe I'm completely wrong about the method, but the way i think it's done can recreate the effect 100%.

Katrielalex is rather right, if you are going into coin magic, read Bobo's book.
If you are not into reading you can try one of the DVDs on the market, personally I'm not into coin magic but I heard that the DVD of David Stone's coin magic is good, Also Mcbride's manipulation DVDs (not exactly "coin magic" but you will find that he teaches all the needed slights), also heard that "Modern Coin Magic" is rather good.

But to the point, the truth is that no slight will give you the clean vanish a gimmick will, But, the question is: are you willing to spend so much money for a gimmick that does mostly one thing (beside the M5 that is also a lot more expansive), rather then spending the same amount on a book or a DVD that can teach you to do much much more.

Oh yeah and Revolution is c*** (not the best), don't buy it.

Another great resource for vanishes is Al Schneider's stuff (He's the inventor of the matrix routine) . The Schneider vanish is stunning as well as some of his other vanishes.

You can either get his stuff on dvd - The Schneider Technique, or you can get his books at http://www.worldmagiccenter.com/

It's not really a coin 'vanish' but coin through the can looks great.

If you want an impromptu coin vanish, you should get Revolution. The effect is awsome ( as u can see in the video) and require no gimmick/prop. You can borrow a coin and do it anywhere. If you want something with gimmick but again with a good effect, get the dvd GONE ( from expertmagic). This dvd is better than MELT. Also, if you like doing magic with a jacket, long sleeve (I like doing it with short sleeve, look cleaner) then get Raven !

I hope this will help you !

In my opinion, Revolution is THE best !

Re revolution:

When done well (i.e. practiced, practiced, looked in a mirror, filmed, practiced...) the vanish is perfect. That is, there are no funny moves and nothing can be seen.

Unfortunately, there are cons too. It cannot always be performed, there are certain conditions that need to be met. I would assume that everyone could meet them though. (Is that vague enough?) It is somewhat angle sensitive as well (you have about 90 degrees to use without flashing) and if you mess up you've messed up badly (i.e. the secret will be easily revealed).

If you can dedicate the time and effort needed to perfect Revolution then it is a truly excellent vanish. Just don't try it before you're ready.

Exactly my thoughts from Bundy's post. If you did work out the secret from the second video but not from the first, it implies to me the second performance was not up to scratch. When perfected its a great vanish and I would recommend it to any coin workers out there.

I would really seriously consider investing time in learning from Modern Coin Magic by BOBO. This will give you so much material to use and the book is so cheap now that it should be on every magician's shelf.
