Andy, I think you're way off the mark with the 'different people/different books' theory.
For instance, Derren Brown studies Lennart Green. And therefore, their taste in books is similar, I'd imagine (Although Lennart's are probably in Swedish!!!)
My point is, I think that to some extent, 'studying' magi (and I would imagine that magi of ALL levels STILL study - you never stop learning...) are very eclectic in their book purchases.
I, for instance, concentrate mainly on cards and coins - although I have countless books on threadwork, stage work, sponge magic, parlour, escapism... it's a rather broad art, is magic.
My book collection over the years is nowhere near as expansive as Dale's, with a mere fifth of the books in the collection. But there's SUCH diversity. And if you consider that although I can't abide the 'Blaine' entity, I have purchased his book for research/info, and what a bloomin' good read it is.
I think this is the point... most books on the subject will teach you a lot about the art, not necessarily about your personal 'discipline'.
Therefore, I would imagine that 'favourite books' don't necessarily reflect personality or 'discipline'.
Point in question: My discipline and love is card magic, although I'd rate my favourite magic books as being Derren Brown's Absolute Magic, Art of Escapes series by Novak (Curious? You SHOULD read this), and the mammoth 'Roth's Coin Magic'. See... none of them directly involving card magic, although I'd say that they ARE my favourite books.
