So many books to choose from.

Postby andycoates » Nov 25th, '03, 17:34

I remember reading somewereh a couple of days ago in the forum about the sugestion of putting together a top buy of book lists.
I then had an idea
Why doesnt everyone, if they want to of course, put their personal collection of books on the first introduction post. Or a new topc could be created called something like, Personal Choices, or whatever where people can post a personal topic of which books they own.

Does that make any sense?

Possibly a list of books (with a very brief summary if needed or link to an earlier review if appropriate) might be interesting. I'll have a look though my dusty collection and see what it looks like on screen!

I don't have that many but it's well over 50 so I can see the problem. Perhaps just a selection of those favoured most - a sort of Desert Island Magic Books type of thing? (Cue the music folks - we're on the air!)

Its a nice idea, but not sure how feasible it will be.

We could also for example just as easily put all the tricks, manuscripts, dvd's and vidoes etc. up as well, but that would end up me an amazingly long list and for what purpose?

Maybe there should be one long bibliography/list, in a sticky somewhere that lists all the books we collectively own? But then how will this be helpful to us?

Nice idea though...

Just toget an idear of what peoples personal prefrences are, different styles and types of magic can be asosciated with wat books people read, or DVD's. Eg. Derren Brown will probably have a diferent selection of books to Lennart Green. I know its an extreme example but you get the idea.

Andy, I think you're way off the mark with the 'different people/different books' theory.

For instance, Derren Brown studies Lennart Green. And therefore, their taste in books is similar, I'd imagine (Although Lennart's are probably in Swedish!!!)

My point is, I think that to some extent, 'studying' magi (and I would imagine that magi of ALL levels STILL study - you never stop learning...) are very eclectic in their book purchases.

I, for instance, concentrate mainly on cards and coins - although I have countless books on threadwork, stage work, sponge magic, parlour, escapism... it's a rather broad art, is magic.

My book collection over the years is nowhere near as expansive as Dale's, with a mere fifth of the books in the collection. But there's SUCH diversity. And if you consider that although I can't abide the 'Blaine' entity, I have purchased his book for research/info, and what a bloomin' good read it is.

I think this is the point... most books on the subject will teach you a lot about the art, not necessarily about your personal 'discipline'.

Therefore, I would imagine that 'favourite books' don't necessarily reflect personality or 'discipline'.

Point in question: My discipline and love is card magic, although I'd rate my favourite magic books as being Derren Brown's Absolute Magic, Art of Escapes series by Novak (Curious? You SHOULD read this), and the mammoth 'Roth's Coin Magic'. See... none of them directly involving card magic, although I'd say that they ARE my favourite books.

Well i see your point bu i still think its a good idear, what about instead of listing all books, list ones that are an absoulte cracking read, eg, you mentioned "Art of Escapes series by Novak" ive never heard of this book before but i am curious after you have mentioned it.
