I never have that problem with the riffle force these days. When I do it it's more about the converstion between me and the spectator which goes "Tell Me when to stop" *brief pause* "Stop!". The cards are merely there to give meaning to why you've asked them to say stop. They feel like it was a free choice of card but in actual fact the deck of cards had very little to do with any of it. :)

If you feel like someone is trying to take the p*ss with you then try waiting for them to say stop ridiculously late and riffle off the rest of the deck as they say it. Then say "do it while I'm still going down the deck if you don't mind, it doesn't work when there's no cards left." Failing that go with the exact card they want you to stop at and let them have it...and do a pick a card trick that needs no set-up and no force. If you don't know one of these you really shouldn't be attempting card magic.

...a tiny subtley (spelling?) i have used with the riffle is when they say stop, ask them "are you sure? you dont want another card? the one above? below?"...

do it, then get eye contact and ask again "sure? happy now?"

then just carry on as normal...

I have to agree with Kati - the spread cull force is a very elegant and fairly easy force to carry out, and never arouses suspicion. It is also the perfect force to use as back up if you are practising the classic force. If you don't know it, learn it!

Another elegant, and bold force is just a simple cut, using a bridge - the spectator merely cuts to any card of his 'choice'. This is definitely one to use when it's not obvious that a card is being chosen, as a spec will be much more complicit, and the method will be much safer, and if it fails it has an easy out using a glimpse.

I mainly go with the riffle force and the bottom force at the moment, I used to use cross cut and slip cut a while ago, but I decided the the riffle and bottom are usually more convincing.
I've never had any trouble with either of those forces, while doing the riffle I try to keep the spectators mind occupied with my patter etc etc, that way if they do decide to stop at an uncomfortable place they (hopefully) won't notice.
Anyway, if they say "thats not where I said stop" you can always go "oh, sorry, lets try again"

I'm sure I said this somewhere else but for those who wanna practice the classic force it's best to do it in an environment with no pressure. Begin a standard pick a card trick that requires no forcing and pick up a break ANYWHERE in the deck. You don't need to know the card, it's not important. Just try and force them the card either side of your break (whichever you wanna practice). This way if you get it wrong you can still carry on with the trick you'd originally planned to do.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Sankey's Wichita Slip. When you get it down, it;s just one of those fluid kinetic moves. It also hides the back of the card and leaves you with just one card face up, unlike the DL triple force mentioned earlier. And I personally like the riffle force. If anyones giving me any bother with it I'll abandon the attempt and go with a slip cut force, which looks exactly the same.
