A quick card change

Postby Mooch » Aug 31st, '06, 10:25

Hi,
I recently thought up a way to do this card change, and thought I'd post a quick performance here:

http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=1332923347954911044

I'm pretty new to magic (only been doing it for about a month), but I'm quite proud of this trick. Would you mind letting me know if my handling looks a little awkward or anything?
Sorry about the video quality and lack of sound - I had to use my webcam which has no mic. Also, I could have done the trick selecting a card from the deck, but I was trying to cut down on filesize, as it takes me hours to upload anything.
Thanks.

Hi,
I'm not willing to divulge the method at the moment, but I think that I will probably do either an ebook and/or video with that trick and a couple more I thought up sometime soon.
Glad you like it though :D

Interesting concept, but I am quite positive I have seen that elsewhere with cards. I know personally a magician who does something quite similar with billets. Work on your handling a little, make it look more natural and you will have a good effect to play with. Although it seems a bit impractical as there are many other better changes that don't ruin the cards. But you could always go into a torn and restored (like D Garcia's) right afterwards!

I would NOT think about selling anything after only being in magic for 1 month. You need to have a very well rounded knowledge and background before you attempt to do so.

Hey i1011i,
Thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it. I will be working on the handling a bit, as it still looks a little forced. I've also got a small torn and restored card routine I made up, which is perfect after this trick.
As for the selling, I was planning on maybe offering a couple of them for free, just to see what people think of my attempts at tricks. Then after a while, if people like them, I could try doing a couple more tricks and either selling those, or giving them away for free again.
Thanks again :)

Edit: Sorry, I forgot to say I'm sure this trick and a few of my others have already been performed. I'm just not currently aware of that. I guess that goes to prove what you say about needing a lot more time before trying to sell tricks ;)

Good plan. I would suggest you work on the effects until you can do them blindfolded in a tornado infront of 1000 hawk eye spectators. (Then let them get sucked into the funnel and laugh). Then perform it as much as you can for as many new people as you can to guage how strong the effect it. Then submit it to any magic ezine you respect. Do this a few times to get a name for yourself.

I got this same advice on this same forum. And it is good stuff.

Thanks again i1011i, that is some sound advice.

I would suggest you work on the effects until you can do them blindfolded in a tornado infront of 1000 hawk eye spectators. (Then let them get sucked into the funnel and laugh).

Might take me a while then, although I'm sure it would be worth it just for the amusement at the end ;)

Then perform it as much as you can for as many new people as you can to guage how strong the effect it.

Another good idea. I've only showed it to my family and friends so far, but I'll try to get out and do some performing a little later.

Then submit it to any magic ezine you respect. Do this a few times to get a name for yourself.

Do you have any suggestions for magic ezines? I've never read any myself, but it seems that I should get searching.
Thanks again.

It's nice :). One feature (neither good nor bad) is that it's relatively indirect (i.e. you don't see the change happening -- clear as mud!) so it lends itself to a later change. Why not use it as part of a two card transposition? You should be able to integrate it with Sankey's Paperclipped! quite well -- that would be a nice transposition!

i1011i has a point, there were a couple parts of the video (only watching it once) that flashed and devulged key elements of the effect. I used to practice with a mirror set across from me so I could catch the flashing (this was before a regualr people could afford video cameras).

Other than that, the effect itself is good and, with the practice already mentioned by others, would make a good addition to an act.

There is a way that you could do that without folding the cards, but your handling would have to be very good. P.M. me if you are interested.
