Trick Invention

Postby lindz » Aug 24th, '06, 16:12

I have recently developed my first trick i am going to write the basic plot on it. All i wanted to know was whether you would think this is a good effect or if you would be tempted to buy it just by the sound of what im writing obviously because im not sure whether its worth the hassle of taking it to a magic shop.

The Effect:

You give the spectator a prediction card. Then you ask them to pick a card. When they take their card ask them to yurn it over and reveal their card e.g 3 of hearts. Now you ask them to turn over the prediction card and you ask them if it matches. They say but the prediction card is blank.
So you say ok and proceed to pull out a little key ring lite or torch and shine it on the blank card and when the lite is on the card you can clearly see the 3 of hearts or whatever card it is.

Thanx i would just like to know what you think of this by the sound of it

If it's the method I'm thinking of then I think that a fellow by the name of Ian Adair may have beaten you to it...I'll have to look it up, but I definitely remember something very similar.

Other things to consider: what is the point of doing that other than it being a novel revelation? Come up with an engaging, original and novel presentation and you are part of the way there. Secondly, how often have you performed it? Or is it something you just came up with and want to sell for a quick buck? Audience-testing is crucial, you get to see how real people react to your effect and look at ways to improve it.

There are some useful articles on www.online-visions.com about people publishing their own material. Granted these are more orientated towards books, but a lot of the points behind them still apply.

Also check out the Scorpion kit from Ellusionist. I'm afraid a lot of people have gotten there before you :(

...for a patter idea though, maybe something along the lines of memory and the problems you have remembering things...

"its strange that no matter how hard you think of the card, your mind can just go..." turn over the card "...blank"..."maybe this can shed some light on it..."

then do you u.v. thingy...just off the top of my head anyways...

Thanx for your suggestions they were more than helpful and thanx for putting your time in to find out if its been done and also your time to write your response. I came up with the idea 2 nights ago and ive tried it on about 5 strangers and my responsives have been pretty good. The reason i asked fellow magicians if it was a good idea is because i dont want it to be another trick you buy for 10 or 20 pounds use it once then throw it in your drawer because like me i am sure you to are fed up with badly made props and gimmicks i am in this to help magic i dont care about the money if its gonna inflict more tacky effects on the market id rather not put it out there. sorry about that i thought i should give a proper explanation as to why i asked seeing as you are all putting time and effort to help me out

The Adair one is a similar effect, but with a selected card appearing in the torch and not on the card.
