Old timers help

Postby crispy » Sep 13th, '06, 09:44

Guys i need a little help.

Some magi friends of mine arranged some time ago to pay a local old folks home a visit for an hour or two. There is no fee involved so they talked me into getting involved for the experience, at the time it seemed like a great ideal but i am now starting to worry about the whole thing. I have VERY little performing experience in the real world and would appreicate any tips In dealing with this type of audience in particular. I only intend to do 3-4 effects max then move on to another group. The effects that I intend to use are as follows.
Red Hot mama
Holy Moly sankey coin trick with washers
Daley's last trick.
Freewill with ESP cards
I know that these tricks are not earth shattering but I have managed to almost perfect there workings and patter.

Any help to stop me s**ting it any more would be greatly received.

Cheers
Chris

a nappy?

i think you're probably building it up too much in your mind mate...i think they'll just enjoy it for the entertainment it is, they wont throw cabbages at you...just relax and enjoy it...

if you feel comfy with the effects mentioned, then fine...take it nice and easy and fun, and im sure they will too...

they do say if you get nervous, just imagine the audience naked...dont do that this time though...please...

relax, have fun, have a little natter with them, just think of them all as friendly aunties and uncles....

These effects are really good, as very visual, and you're gonna blow their mind away.
Do not worry... It is very rare that people reject magicians.
Also, take your time chill out... and enjoy. :D

I'm not an old-timer but some advice that I benefitted greatly from: just DO it. Before the gig, perform to people who are interested out and about. It's nerve-wracking but the only answer is to do it. Be scared, but by the end of it you'll realise that you can do it. And then each time it'll get easier and easier and easier.

Another piece of advice is to build a good rapport with your audience. Chat casually. This way you'll feel more comfortable performing for them, and they will be more likely to ignore any slight slips that might occur.

Relax, and so long as you know your effects will you will do great!

Yes, don't take this too seriously, or rather don't take yourself too seriously. Make a few jokes in the beginning... that you are just checking out the premises before you apply there yourself. Don't rely too much on magic where people have to remember something or watch a quick move. I have never performed magic in old people's home, but I have been many times to those places playing music on Saturday afternoons, I setup my keyboard and play something they can relate to, sing long etc. They are usually very thankful that somebody has free time to spend... and usually we all do, if we just take a moment.
I think what you are doing is great :)

Performed magic for old folks last night at my Grandad's 93rd birthday party.
as mentioned above, keeping it simple is a good idea.
biddle trick warmed them up well. Design for laughter made their chins hit the floor. Followed up with a rather nifty ambitious, they were in stitches.
A few coins came out and much fun was had by all
:D

not a fan of sigs, so I won't bother adding o..... oh

That reminds me, my Grandad died at his 98th Birthday party - and we were only halfway through giving him the bumps at the time

Mine died peacefully, in his sleep - unlike the passengers on his bus.

Actually, on a serious note, does anyone still get butterflies or shaky hands when they show off a new effect for the first time? I do. I think it's a good thing, like an adrenaline rush.

all the time!

Computer games don't affect kids; I mean if Pac-Man affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms, munching magic pills and listening to repetitive electronic music. - Kristian Wilson, Nintendo, Inc, 1989..
