thumb fan

Postby mafiosoromano » Sep 16th, '06, 21:33

I bet most of you have never been asked to know how a meager little "thumb fan" is done among all of your tricks or flourishes. This is the basic among the basic. I can spread the whole pack with one hand, but seem to fail when doing the original thumb fan.

I purchased showoff with cards and during the "watch the moves" section it displays a thumb fan as the very first move, but when you choose to learn the moves, the thumb fan is nowhere to be found. Call me conservative or what you will, I think the thumb fan looks more decent than the regular one handed fan with the whole pack that I've just picked up on my own and I would like the knowledge to be able to do the original thumb fan move.

I tried mirroring what the person did during the display portion of the thumb fan, but it was all too fast for me to pick up.

Any help or explanation would be highly appreciated.

Thanks.

(This isn't exposure is it? Just a simple spreading of cards.)

Firstly, I wouldn't suggesting learning off Showoff with Cards but that's your choice. I just wouldn't recommend it because they teach a few things incorrectly. e.g. The Charlier Cut with the middle finger and that my friend is absolutely pointless because it's just plain harder!

The thumb fan is a process of beveling the cards in an arc formation in the hands. Bevel the cards on a table like a spread and you have to do this in the hands. You have to know the starting position though. I'd recommend getting XB or The Flourishman's "Encyclopedia of Playing Card Flourishes".

Possible anyone can point me in the direction of a book, website, videos (other than the ones already aforementioned) that would aid me in this maneuver? Perhaps even a brief explanation PMd or written here, I would appreciate it.

I think Xtreme Beginner seems like the best route for now until I receive more insight. Thanks guys.

If you observe what he is doing on show of, you can learn it. It is mlore a knack to get than anything else. I learned it on my own, and I only can do it in one hand... I am hopeless with the other, but again it is practice.

XB I think is the best choice. I haven't seen any other sources with a better explanation for it. However, Encyclopedia of Playing Card Flourishes teaches other flourishes that can be combined with the thumb fan, like a deck twirl or a fan twirl.

your library will most probably have some magic books and if they do they will probably have fans in there

Hmn, the library is a good option, but it would be best to pick up Xtreme Beginnerz instead, that will teach you a lot more.

Besides, its easier to learn flourishes from a video rather than pictures.

I guess it is a knacky move, I can't remember the time when I couldn't do it, but I think it just came after a while.

Yeah same deal here as I've said, can only do it in one hand.. but I've seen Brad Christian do the thumb fan using both hands so many times on his videos during a presentation and other magicians as well. When showoff came I thought it'd be neat to finally learn some flourishes and start bare bones... was very disappointed to find out my disc was glitched, incomplete, or whatever.. because it actually leaves out the teaching of the thumb fan.

I can deal with doing the fan one-handed, but the use of both hands seems so smooth. Thanks for all the help.

ya its in my copy of showoff also...

its all a knack....just practice....and you should be able to get it after a while

just watch the performance of it being done in slow motion...and that will help also.

I think my DVD had the same glitch, you can't access the thumb fan from the menu but if you choose the first one on the list then press <-- twice on the remote i thing it comes up. Am at work now so can't check for certain but I remember something like this happening....

Hope this helps

P.S I have seen the tutorial and am still c**p at it!!! :(
