.m4b files are one of Apple's proprietary formats; they're for audiobooks. The actual file is the same as a .m4a file.

If you bought it off iTunes then it will have DRM encryption (I...will...not...rant ...about...DRM) so you can't convert it legally.

If you didn't you can convert it with something like Super (C) at erightsoft.com

Apple just released a new version of itunes with updated DRM to block a program that could remove it.

Took minutes before it was cracked.

argh, can I find the link on the Register? Nope.

That's why everyone hates DRM! Personally I think it's a stupid idea on everybody's part to stop people from using their music the way they want, but hey!

Shall I PM you a simple way to get round the DRM? It's, uh, quasi-legal.

Is that the old key sequence? I didn't know it still worked if it is.

Nah...ah, what the heck, I'll just post it here.

If you want to remove the DRM from any tracks in any program, just burn the protected tracks to a CD and re-import them to your library from the CD.

(Why does it work? CD format doesn't support encryption so the DRM is automagically removed from the files when they are converted. Once that's done you can re-import them - at a slight quality loss - to unprotected mp3s. There are lots of ways that don't involve burning to a CD but that works and should always work, at least until someone comes up with a CD format that supports encryption.)
