jugglem - I believe that he is talking about getting permission to use the Sinatra song, and not for copyrighting the trick per se.

You certainly need to register with the Performing Rights people, pay an annual fee, and you can then use copyrighted material for public performances. There are various categories so check carefully before you lay out the cash.

Sometimes the place where you're appearing will already have such permissions so you might want to check that as well.
