Well i dont think this is the correct place to debate this, and am sorry i posted what i did. was maybe a little too inflammatory about books considered biblical in magic circles. i really do love those books, but i really do believe other sources provide a better grounding in card magic as it is today. I should have worded it better. I do think they're best studied later now rather than at the beginning (and i mean studied). Maybe subconciously i hate people mining old books for cool stuff. so dont anyone read anything by roy walton, he's rubbish .

Interestingly, the RRTCM DVD isn't listed in the Products on Paul Wilson's site (http://www.rpaulwilson.com). I wonder if he got paid a flat fee and so gets no royalities on sales.

Tangentally, but also interesting, is The Real Hustle, which is on BBC 3, lots (on again tonight, in fact). I've seen this in the TV guide for ages, but never bothered watching. Then, the other day, I idly tuned in halfway through and who's one of the show's three 'scam artists'? Yep, Wilson. The show is an exposure of 'real life scams' - they demonstrate the things by pulling them on unknowing members of the public. It's quite fun. Though I'm surprised that no one has said, as I would have done immediately, 'In fact, I am not going to make any kind of bet with you, because you are R Paul Wilson and I am not insane.'

When I first logged onto Talkmagic, this was the one first recommended to me. I managed to pick it up on e-bay brand new for £16.

It was the 4 DVD version but nonetheless I love it. Not knowing anything at all really about magic I just thought it was a great starter simply cos it focuses less on "here's a trick" to "here's a technique that you can use to make tricks"

From that I've now gota repertoire of a dozen or so fairly simple tricks that to Joe Bloggs look really impressive. My in-jog still needs practice but just some of the little tricks are just very neat and simple and easy to pick up

I think the 4 DVD set is different - that it, not the R Paul Wilson one. However, you can't grumble at sixteen quid, and you can't really go wrong with the RRTCM in any form: you got a good deal there (though the word 'eBay' anywhere near the word 'magic' always makes me a bit anxious).

I know this has been discussed back and forth, but here is my two cents on the two different dvd sets...

I own both and I've watched both multiple times.
I wonder how many of the people offering opinions can say the same.
(I bought the 4 DVD magic makers set before being told on here that it was rubbish compared to the Paul Wilson one).

I know what I am about to say is heresy.

IMHO they are much of a muchness. Certain techniques are explained better in the 4 DVD set and others in the 5 DVD one. I actually prefer the teaching technique of the guy on the 4 dvd set. (Seeing two people present the same trick is very enlightening - and shows the value of presentation). The 4 DVD set seems to have a much more upbeat performance and is generally better paced. I tend to use that one to jog my memory about a certain trick or move.

Paul Wilson's effort has more "dead-sections" where he just pads or re-iterates the same material. I felt like it needed a good edit, whereas the other one was probably ironically a more rushed production and therefore not over padded. The 4 DVD set repeats just when the handling gets tricky.

In conclusion I think it is TOTALLY personal preference, and if you have the 4 DVD set I don't think you are missing much and the 5 DVD set is much higher priced.

This just proves that what suits one person doesn't necesarily suit another - thanks for your frank input, much appreciated!

Just got the 5 disc set and it's very good, though he rushes through some of the slights and flourishes, and it always seems to be the ones I haven't got the grip of yet!
All in all a good learning tool in conjunction with the book. Some of the descriptions in the book are a bit confusing so it's good to actually see them.
Also, can't work out R Paul Wilson's accent! Is he Scottish or American or a Scotsman putting on a slight American accent?

How come it's being sold for 60.- at most shops, but for 50.- at e.g. world-of-magic (the only one I could find where it is sold for 50)? Is it just that they're friendly and cheap or is there some catch? I'm always a bit cautious when I find things cheaper than what seems to be a standard prize. I haven't shopped at world-of-magic yet - are they reliable? If so, since I'm planning to get the DVD-set, I may as well get it there and save some money.

I bought it from world of magic for 49.99. There service was excellent the shipping very fast (3 days from UK to Greece) and the item is the original 5 DVD set. I would highly recommend them.

sorry to ressurect the thread but.......ive been dooing fours of a kind from the last disk quite a lot and just thought id remind folks of it.......it has slayed everyone ive done it for, and advise people to take another peek.....what a kick in the knackers it has at the end (i love it)

I'm pretty new to card magic and would like to buy this DVD set. I don't have the book version already, is it advisable to buy the book as well?

as far as I read around, the dvd version does not contain all the material covered in the book, so the best option is to buy them both. And the book is pretty cheap, by the way...

True... and there are a couple of things on the DVD set that are not in the book, and some things where RPW teaches a slightly different handling.

If I remember correctly, RPW introduces the DVDs by saying that you'll get the most benefit from following the DVDs with a copy of the book to hand. I have both and have found that I use both.

If you're spending the money on this DVD set, you'd be daft not to spend the additional £5-10 on a copy of the book.
