Struggling with an effect? Any tips (without giving too much away!) you'd like to share?

im with my old mate DAT on this one, there is no difference in buying one and sharing it then just sharing the secrets of magic between 2 people

what if every one did that? then we would all be performing the ACR cos nothing else was being invented lol

I agree. A lot of magic stores do not accept returns because you are paying for the secret. If you split the cost of the DVD then you are paying 50% of the price of the secret but you are learning 100% of the secret. You may not see the problem with that now but try to imagine that you have created an effect and produced a DVD that teaches that effect. Would you want multiple people to learn from one DVD and use your effect in their performances, making money from their performances while you have not made the money due you from each person who laerned from your DVD?

I understand not wanting to spend more money than you feel you have to, but I believe that you have to look at it from the effect creator's viewpoint, and if you cannot then try to place youefelf in that person's position and think if you would want someone to cheat you out of your deserved income. I have some books that I lend to people (usually people just starting out in magic), but I purchase extra copies of the books for lending and, if the person stays in magic I have them purchase a copy for themselves. You work hard to earn your money, and so do the magicians who sell their effects. Both deserve to be compensated for their work. Also keep in mind, if a magician does not make enough money from selling their effects due to people copying DVDs, photocopying books and/or sharing them that magician may just stop selling their effects. In that case, the person copying and/or sharing may have saved some money but has harmed, both directly and indirectly, a number of other magicians.

I will get off my soapbox now....

From a different, possibly more 'positive' perspective:

Perhaps, if each of you have a copy to study, you can take different things from it and combine your knowledge to help one another grasp the whole effect.

This, I'd imagine, is one of the biggest strengths of a partnership anyway. Otherwise, what do you need a second person for on a one-man trick?

Partner or no partner, if you both do the same tricks -- you may as well be just one. It might be best for one of you to learn Fraud, and another to take on, say, Sinful -- and keep the secrets to yourself. This way, while one of you is performing, the other can honestly deter the questions that should inevitably come his way about how it was done.

I'm not saying everyone should be sharing copies here and dont really approve of anyone doing so.. and correct me if I'm wrong.. but isnt it the magic dealers that lose out and not the magician?

I could be wrong but I'm assuming the magician who is releasing his effect has already earned his money by selling the publishing rights to a DVD company.. who then sell the dvds to the magic shops who sell the dvds to us. If the original poster only buys one copy, that isnt going to affect the magician at all is it?

It depends on the situation, really - bizkit.

Yes, the dealer loses some money, but so does the publisher, and the magician, as well. Apart from any money the magician receives from the publisher for creating the dvd or whatever, they also get a percentage of each individual sale. It's not always a ton of money - but if someone was snatching 10 cents out of your pocket every couple of days, you might get annoyed.
