Tips on Out of this World

Postby darrenthomson » Oct 3rd, '06, 16:40

Hi gang,

I am fairly new to magic and the trick that compelled me to "dig deeper" 6 months ago was "Out Of This World". I saw a guy perform it at a bar in Vegas and just *had* to know the secret..

Anyway, I am performing it now and just wondered if anybody has any good tips for its presentation. I'm getting good reactions but feel that my version could be a little slicker. Not asking for any reveals here, just tips on performance style, handling etc.. Personally, I think that OOTW is one of the all-time greats and i'd love to do it justice.

Also, does anybody know of a good OOTW performance that I could watch ?

Take care,

Darren

You could do a lot worse than getting hold of a copy of 'The Devil's Picturebook' (DVD) by Derren Brown. Some great stuff on there including his version of OOTW with some innovative approaches to it.

Oh wow! I actually have that DVD and didn't realise that it had an OOTW type trick on it.. I'll take another look.

Thanks,

Darren

Another version is Ron Bauer's "Feminine Side" which is a version with 17 cards.

Bauer's little booklet is NOT just a description of how to do the trick!
It an entire performance script, complete with all theatrical direction and psychology explained.

Even if you don't perform it, it will improve your magic.

I'd be really interested to hear what you think of it, after you've watched it, Darren... let us know! :)

Magic Video Depot should have some versions on there if you want to see it being done. I have to chip in and say check out 'Galaxy' by Paul Harris. Is in the Art of Astonshiment books (volume 3??? i think). Is a very slick, very sweet handling of this effect.

As far as preperation goes, I have done this spontaneously many times during the middle of a performance. After doing several tricks will a normal deck I usually have plenty of mis-direction to set up the deck right in front of their faces.

Throughout the whole trick make your motions simple and smooth, Don't make any unnessarsay movements.

This is a great trick for pulling out jokes and gags. Theres plenty of space for a comment here and there, and that really adds to the excitement. Without feedback the trick can sometimes get dull for the spectators as they mindlessly listen to "red" and "black" for so long.

i would say this effect is perfect for showing how people have inate psychic-like intuition, and how gut reactions are usually right...

if you perform the original (and others, i only really use the Curry and Brown versions myself) - i do like to say halfway through on the original version - "tell you what, did you want to shuffle the rest of that pack again? would it help you get in tune again - or do you want to leave them as they are?"..

that way, they can say for a fact that you never touched the cards when it all turns out "the way it does"...

Thanks for the tips so far everybody.. Some great ideas idea that I will try to incorporate.

The part of the trick that I need to tighten up is the movement of the bottom "marker card" to the top of the stack that i "control" towards the end of the effect..Trying my best to "spoil" here !

Any tips on the crucial move towards the end of the effect ?

Ta.

The best way of doing Out of This World is naturally my method. Oh very well-it isn't mine. It belongs to the late George Blake and has been around for decades but is very little known.

You TELL them beforehand that you are going to set up the deck and do it quite openly. Figure that one out.

Nope. I am not giving the rest away. I have given enough clues. If you can discover what I am talking about then you will deserve to have it. It will be worth the sacrifice. Seek and ye shall find.

Incidentally I think I gave away the secret somewhere or other (and perhaps on this very forum) of getting the spectator to give you a card he was not sure of and it turned out to be a joker.

Got it, Mark...(found your other thread). Nice setup...and the joker thing is fantastic.

Thanks for the help,

D.
