Routine

Postby wordie » Sep 26th, '06, 23:00

Okay, so ive got all my tricks that i own, as perfect as i can get them, and i want to start going to the street, so, i wanted to know if you guys could help me set up a "routine" so to speak,

i can do all the basic card tricks (ambitious card, all sorts of passes, palms,) i can do some coin stuff, some levitations, and i have some tricks i bought such as coin in soda can, and some other stuff, and i want to go to the street to do some, but i want to do more than one trick, so go up, catch the attention with one good trick, then do some others, say thanks and leave

so could you guys help me come up with a good "set" to perform

and alos, while your here, recommend some stuff for stage performances

Thanks, Tyler

"Perfect" there is no such thing, exspecially in magic. How long have you been practicing the art.

And this is where you need to get creative and think on your own. A routine that works for me, wont work for everyone else. You need to find somethin that works for you. And we couldnt make you one anyway, since we dont know much about you.

ok, so first things first, there is an introductions part to the site i suggest you post one, tell people a bit about you, where your from, what kind of magic your into, people will take you much more seriously on this site if you do (trust me on this i found out the hard way) secondly. how old are you? if your under 16 possible even 18 you face a hell of a risk going out and trying to perform magic to complete strangers ( btw if your trying to be the next David Blaine by doing what he did on the street i would personally rethink your strategy- it is VERY unlikely to work) i totally agree with David on this a routine should be personal to you - copying Gazzo's routine or Cellini's routine isn't going to get you very far. next point as far as routining goes have you practised to a non partisan audience yet i.e not family or friends? i suggest you get more practice with that side of performance - create a personality unique to yourself don't just do the trick, thats boring and very much overdone. magic is amazing but only if your performing it with passion, some guy doing card tricks one by one without patter, is just some guy doing tricks he's not a magician. i think u might be trying to run before you can walk, get the basics of your act down first otherwise out on the street you'll get eaten alive. good luck

Thousands of things you can consider....I remember when I started getting more serious about things and was looking to perform some steet magic. I often found the idea of developing a "routine" to be overwhelming, so this is what I did....

Started by finding an effect that was suitable to use as my opening effect...something quick, not alot of patter, and a way to approach specs.

From there I started feeling out where the effect would take me, and then segway into an effect that flowed well from the first....this way I ended up with a small routine of two effects....

Once that began to feel comfortable, I worked in a third, then a fourth, etc.....and my routine grew over time, not preplanned at all!

For example, look into a simple vanish......consider approaching someone and ask them if they can make change for a dollar, before handing them teh bill perform a quick vanish and reapperance.

If they look like they showed interest, make the change as planned, and then do some kind of coin effect.....when done, you can reach into your pocket and put the change away and move into a monte type of routine....using patter about making/losing money, etc.....

I hope you can see what I am saying....bottom line, if it is overwhelming, build from one trick to two, a series or three, to four, etc

If I were you, I'd stay away from doing levitations. I still perform one every now and then (a version of Wild Levitation, if you are wondering), but generally, you just wind up looking, well, stupid. You have to practice a LOT to do a convincing levitation. Unless you really want to do one, I would just stick to cards, coins, ropes, elastic bands and that kind of stuff. This way, you can also patter and make jokes during your performance. How many jokes do you see made during a levitation performance? None. Because then it becomes less convincing.
