How to get into resteraunt work

Postby jugglemonkey » Dec 7th, '03, 22:18

Icouldnt find a place on the forum for this kind of question so i thought this fitted it the best...

So far I have only used magic effects as part of my (prodomenetly) juggling orientated street/cabaret act. I am interested in begining performing more "close up" table hopping effects.

-What kind of Promo package do I need to put together for this?
-How many effects do I need to carry around? ( i know I dont need different effects for each table as they will be a new set of spectators)
-What sort of fee should I charge?
-what sort of time set should i do?
-Do i look at getting contracts(say once a week) or just one offs?

Thanks alot guys/gurls
Any help would be great :D

Very interesting post, I really do look forward to the answers from some of our users.
I am an infrequent pub worker with a limited table routine but this happened by accident really, if I actualy had to sit down and work out a plan to achieve this I wouldn't know where to start, good question.
Though there is probably no black and white answer other than try try try again.

try giveing bussiness cards to pubs and clubs to start with unless your loaded, then book an agent.
-How many effects do I need to carry around? ( i know I dont need different effects for each table as they will be a new set of spectators)
no more than five effects per table from a choise of ten, card routines can account for all of them but a mix is better.
-What sort of fee should I charge?-what sort of time set should i do?
when i was doing it, it was £80 for a half hour set.

-Do i look at getting contracts(say once a week) or just one offs?
depends on the pub or club initialy you will have to do one off's till you get established, you can offer discounts for multiple bookings.

as you get more established you could give clubs and pubs a dvd / vid of some of your work as a promo, if you know a friendly pub landlord and give him some free bookings and a free plug you can knock up an impressive blaine promo which is all above board and genuine

I can't link to that thread as it's special users but if it's about the Bike business cards, I'd be extremely interested.

So maybe I'll just PM Seige

ahhh, I'm a donkey, sorry man.
From the thread :

The printing of 52 cards takes about two hours, so it'd be a couple of days turnaround, depending on what my workload was like.

The quality is great, although it's only possible to print black solids - i.e. no pictures unless they're line drawings. Also, there's a small degree of embossing, but this is barely noticeable and is hidden by the card's texture and background pattern.

The prices above are basically to do the job at cost, by the way.

Pm him for price :) Business cards on playing cards, nice idea.
Hope that helps, sorry about that :)

what an idea! So not only do you get to give them some promo material but they will also be impressed (hopefully) by your skill to begin with. GREAT!

Just finished the Promo letter that I am likely to send off to prospective clients.

Cheers guys

hi, restaurant work, I have found, is a lot harder to get in Britain than other parts of the world because a lot of restaurants don't want the bother of a magician in their restaurant, have never tried them, or think that a restaurant should respect the privacy of its guests and not employ people to interrupt them. Obviously, this is all wrong. An important thing is to get established, yeh business cards etc are pretty much a must, (and always carry them on a job and leave one at each table) but a good idea is to try local hotels, they have many restaurants, pubs etc and are always willing to make their guests' stay more enjoyable. I've always found hotels more approcable than individual restaurants in the U.K. Also, loads of things go on at hotels and they can reccomend you for guests' bookings, such as weddings, (perfect for hopping,) parties etc.

also make sure you think really carefully about your tricks. While this may seem anal, remember that you are giving at least a dozen shows, so each tables' show must be as slick as if you were doing a full stage show. I would personally never do just card tricks for example, what I do is have 'groups' of tricks, e.g. the beginning trick is always an eyecatcher. There are some really cool eyecathers about, raven, cig thru coin, vanishing deck, anything to get their attention thats magical. I try to spend what seems like 10 mins at each table, but you get a feel for when its time to move on. Because I don't like them, I'd always do 1 trick with a deck max, most people IMO know at least 1 card trick which is usually some kind of 'is this your card???' so i always do something a bit dofferent, ambitious card is fast and funny always goes down well for example, or a brainwave deck. Sponge balls are my fav for hopping, they can use everyone in the table and are funny and surprising, and the magic happens in their hands. They're also unusual little things to look at and feel. Find something that works for you. Then there's coin tricks, which I like. You can do anything here and as everyone knows coins and money magic is good, eye cathing. misled or something is good for the notes then you can say 'and ill keep this fiver for my tip...only joking' then hand it back and thay'll hopefully give it you anyway!!! What I like for close up is the funny things, quirky, like match box block, the mad stuff that no-one's going to predict. These always get the best reactions.
I would usually have 4 tricks for a table say, a quickie, card trick, sponge balls or sim then a finisher maybe a coin trick or something money based to encourage the tipping, and gives you chance to put in subtle lines for extra money grabbing. For each trick I would usually have 2 more similar, as whilst you are quite right, you will be performing to different people every time, you bet your life as soon as people realise theres a magician there everyone around will be watching, so have a few different ones. Also dont stuff everything in 1 pocket, plan it all so the props can be in your hands before they know it, make it slick, give ereything a home and practise re-setting everything as cleanly as possible before you move to the next table. You don't want to be going to the toilets to re-set your eight kings threatened to save...every time.
Anyway, thats my pennys worth.
:D
