Please Recomend Some magic DVDs (to all the pros out there)

Postby psychogoat » Oct 17th, '06, 17:22

Hey guys I've got like two magic DVD's but learn alot of stuf from internet resources. I'd really like to get some stuff from the web but there is just so much to choose from... I'd like to learn some impromptu material and some hard-hitting street magic. Any recomendations :?:

My advice to you if you would like to be a serious magician would be:

Don't bother with learning FREE tricks off the internet (if you can get them free off the net, so can anyone!) Impromptu and hard hitting street magic you say! Well, most card magic can be done impromptu.

For a DVD get "The Royal Road to Card Magic" 5 DVD set or "Born to Perform" the latter is more "street"

Coin slights are good to learn, buy "Bobo's Modern Coin Magic" (book) or "Jay Sankey's Revolutionary Coin Magic" DVD

For a good start into general magic you could try "Mark Wilsons Complete Course in Magic" thats over 300 tricks for under £20......

You didn't say what DVDs you have or the type of magic you like, apart from impromptue hard hitting street magic, if it is David Blaine and Criss Angel magic you like, then you will have to spend a load of money on one trick pony "gimicks".

Sorry if part of this sounds cinical, it isn't ment to! it is just honest advice to the best of my knowladge.

Anyway good luck in your quest and get back to us if you want some more advice.

Ok... your login name is "PsychGoat" so I'd assume you want to do Psychic-like demonstrations (like all the other little clones in the world). That being the case I'd start by tracking down the handful of sticky posts in the Mentalism section of this board that address the basics of Mentalism; what books you need to study, in what order and why. I'd likewise go to this site http://www.mastermindreader.com/ and spend several months of your life learning Bob's 39 Steps to Mentalism, the Principalia and Web Concepts and a good 90% of what Bob has to say in his various books, manuscripts & videos. This will give you (anyone) a realistic foundation as to what Mentalism is all about.

Other more "contemporary" resources that I would suggest to a novice such as your self would be the Osterilind Mental Magic video series. It covers some wonderful classics of the craft and will arm you with material that's relatively easy to do. Understand however, this is "Mental Magic" and NOT "MENTALISM" that latter of which requires a bit more discipline and "elemental" knowlege over the other or, to be more concise, the latter seems far mroe real and plausible than the other.

Don't run off thinking you're going to be another Derren Browne or Criss Angel... why would you want to be? That's already been done! The value comes in your learning to be your own character; and individuals that has taken his (her) time to study, practice and actually LEARN their craft from various points of view so that they can excell in what they deliver. So please take the advice that's been offered, and pace yourself by starting with the basics and building up from there.

Thanks Leighton you really helped. The two I've got are Corporare Close-up with Martin Sanderson and How To Do Street Magic by Ellusionist.com.
Any more you can tell me?

AS leighton says royal road to card magic (for card tricks and sleights). JB Bobo book for coin sleights and tricks. Corindas 24 steps to mentalism ( psychic effects i.e mind sleights and props and tricks). All the ones ive mentioned are books but if you start with these three items and put alot of practise in you will go along way my friend. Also it will give you an idea of what sort of magic you want to learn. Alot of people get excited when the new tricks come out and buy these instead. They try to run before they can walk but this way you dont know what type of magic they like and alot of people who buy these three items first actually overtake the people who have been doing magic longer and went straight for the gimmicks. Also all these gimmicks will end up in the drawer five years later. good luck

13 steps by corinda for £24? That's extortionate!

13 Steps for £13?
SAW for £10?
IT for £2?

Cheap?

I'd say 'reasonable' rather than cheap.

I'll look into my magic ball and see what Halloween specials I can come up with...
